Been looking about for a new bike and came across a GSXR400. Some-one said that a certain model and year are very reliable.

Can anyone shed light on this?

Cheers

I didn't say very reliable.

One is spose to have a better engine than the other Wink

The one Mr. Cansa is looking at is a 91.

In my experience the GK76A models handled excellently and engine-wise mine has been sound. The 92-93 models were the last ones to have the full 60bhp, models after it were restricted to 54bhp.

In my opinion they are a good bike, but i wouldn't recommend them as they are quite old and most 400s have been thrashed nearly to death, so they are a bit of a passion really, you might find you'll buy it near the end of its life.

Nc30?

lets see:

They are old , and shagged , with 14-18 years taking their toll,

Noobs looking after them = poorly maintained

overpriced bang vs buck = no worth it (there is one for £1500 in Darwen which can buy a 1999 CBR600)

They have NO cush drive, which means chains don't last very long on them compared to bikes with cush drive.

They are small and compact meaning their are difficult to work on , and ordinary parts like plugs are expensive, like here is me buying spark plugs for the NTV and the CBR at £2 a plug, where NC30 ones cost £5 each.

Single swinger looks cool but makes them easy to nick

18 Inch rear = limited tyre choice,

Good points:

they are definately good looking classic bike

aye Confused

Cheapest I found were £9 and so with shipping you're looking at £40 for a set Shocked

As Itchy has said (and I said to you on MSN last night) NC30's are battered and good ones are expensive. But they do have something kinda special about them and if you really want one what the hell! Just don't expect it to be 100% problem free and don't be afraid of getting your fingers dirty, battered, cut, and worn to the bone to keep it going!!

I loved mine, and probably sold it a little too soon but what the hell I've got a bike I'm extremely happy with now!

Single sided swing arm. I dont take comfort in the theory that it could be seen over taking you on a ride, before you ground to a halt or crash soon after. Sad

Well you used to be able to get them from Gaz , since I went into his workshop at the back once and he was fixing his NC30 up as he'd sold it, and he had a pile of them on the shelf,

eh? ,

they are just as stiff and are heavier as a result , VFRs have single swingers as they are a product of Le Mans type racing and changing tyres is a doddle compared to a conventional swing arm.

I've seen the inside of swingarms , my CBR600 swingarm walls were like 4.5mm thick , the ones on my NTV are lile 6mm thick sorta.

Im not saying the logic and effort isn't there, it's just the idea it could 'fall off' that worries me.

The swinger is bolted to the frame using a big pivot bolt, same as (i hazard a guess) the rest of the bikes on the market, if you have a double sided swingarm guess what still happens if you remove the bolt?

Depends really , I managed to ride my CBR home at motorway speeds with a single sided swing arm after snapping it in 2 places (and cracking it in 4) crashing it at high speed.

I'm still alive to tell the tale.

Eh? what a load of bollocks (mostly).

NC30s have cush drive rubbers, I should know, I had to change mine.

Why in fecks name would have a single sided swing arm make a bike easier to nick?

The only thing you were right on is the 18" rear wheel limiting tyre choice.

Cheers

They're no where near as bad as what itchy is making them out to be. Either he had a dog of a NC30, or hasn't owned one and doesn't know what he's talking about. If you want one get one. I've had mine for about a year now, and the only thing that's gone is the water pump, but as people are breaking them all the time, there are plenty of spares available and most are not that expensive. Head over to 400GreyBike.com for some friendly advice, and you're more than likely to find a bike you like in the for sale section, as well as plenty of spares, performance mods etc at good prices.
