The rear brake lever seems to stick a little and refrains from returning to a full up position on some occasions so that the light is on until I nudge it.

Not the best in traffic to have a brake light on all the time.

Any ideas or is a new master cylinder a good idea?

Either a new one or strip and replace internals with a rebuild kit maybe? Or what about a blast of WD-40? Worth a shot.
If its not muck build up on the pivots then replace the cylinder or internals. Thumbs Up

It is filthy with dirt and road salt, WD40 has yet to improve it.

WD40 might make it worse, since crap sticks to stuff like WD40 FS365 ,and thus gums it up even more, as said I partially disassembled it (foot hanger off , piston off , then removed the circlips , and managed to get a thing screw driver into it to hack away the crud.

Looks like your gunna have to take it off and wipe it down and grease up the pivots again? Its well worth it, better than spending a good couple of quid on a rebuild kit if it doesnt need it.

I feel kind of guilty at the amount of punishment that the bike takes on a daily basis and my blissful ignorance to cleaning it at the moment.

That is exactly what he needs to do. Takes around half an hour, longer if you need a brew, and all will be well again. Thumbs Up

Hobnobs if you'd be so kind and its milk with 2 now that you're asking.

If its a simple spit and polish then it sounds like a plan.

Jet wash, Strip and lube. Grease or copperslip. Check the return spring tension. All the wee coils should be close together touching each other when relaxed.
Clash it together and put your feet up @ gravs bit. Laughing
While he attends to the repairs for you..... Embarassed

Pretty good description actually. No taste, not texture. I'm sticking to the original recipe ones, and looks forward to the usual inch of sediment in the bottom of my pint mug Smile
