I think I must be going mad! Every drive chain I've played with in the past has had a split link on it like the photo below:
https://www.moto-bike.co.uk/admin/pics/chain-link.jpg

I'm currently cleaning up a (temp) chain to stick on my Coguar, as the one on there is knackered. The chain I'm cleaning up has come off another Coguar, but I didn't take it off myself.

I can't seem to find the split link on it anywhere, am I just going really blind, or is there another method of taking the chain apart?

Or do I have to take my back wheel off?

(I feel like a newbie again)

Thanks in advance!

You will need a chain splitter, no point taking the back wheel off as you wont get it past the swingarm. Wink

NOPE! Is the answer.

Unless you wish to cut the chain with a hacksaw.

The deal is:
Motor bike chains are subjected to massive loads Shock loading is worst.
The split link chain links and pins can stretch and come loose.

So the system is to use an interference fit. This will not break. Unless subjected to forces above that which the engine and transmission can produce. Old, worn and poorly maintained chains will split due fatigue.

Enjoy

erg... by the sound of it I won't enjoy!!!!

Considering I twisted my last chain, perhaps its time for a new-un then, instead of a part worn....
