I know that a lot of what I do at the gym I undoubtedly don’t do ‘properly’ so am probably to some degree wasting some of my time spent there.

Can anyone recommend a guide to the basics of general ‘work outs’ and other associated stuff – ie would be nice to be relevant to push biking etc too.

One of those real ‘book’ things is probably best, but an electronic-based guide would be fine too.

My bf works as a personal trainer and has done strength and conditioning as well as coaching and playing for the uni football team. He's pretty good at his stuff, so I shall ask him if there are any books he'd recommend. One I know he's suggested to people in the past is Brawn, by Stuart McRobert. I know it looks like a 'body building' book, but the advice in it is apparently excellent (bf has never been into bodybuilding for the sake of it, more about functionality and being fitter)

Ross Enamits books are very good. He's more into practical strength over body building. His books are worth the £15 or so he charges.

I recommend this book: Strength Training Anatomy (Paperback) by Frederic Delavier

It shows you which muscles are worked by which exercise with nice detailed pictures and also explains how to do the exercises.

The link has a "search inside" feature so you can read a couple of sample pages and get an idea of what the book is like.
I personally found it really good.

Nah mate, I've been buying his books since 2004. He was recommended to me from a Jeet Kune Do form. Me and my friends have been implementing his training methods at kick boxing for years Thumbs Up I used his stuff for training for The Gracie BJJ Championships two year ago and whilst training for P company.
