Partner bought a new aprillia rs 125ccjust before christmas, he had it for just one week when this lady cut him up and knocked him off the bike, dragging him and the bike under her car. The bike was tottaled and is now in the aprillia garage awaiting the ladys insurance company to sort the bike out. Lady has done a runner and claim has gone to special cases.

The long and short of it is that my partner bought the bike to commute, after having his Honda CBR 125cc stolen.

We always liked the Honda, felt it was very reliable and robust. However whats done is done, partner has a poorly Rs sitting in the workshop, and no transport to work. Relieing on a bus.

We could be waiting at least another month to get things sorted.

We saw an advert today for a honda superdream 249cc, y reg. apparently a good runner, had work, needs an MOT.
its going for £200 open to offers. We know a mechanic who we can put it into reasonably for the MOT.

The thing is partner is on a provisional, with a CBT. so he would need to get the bike restricted, in order to insure it and ride it legally.

Does anyone know if this is possible on such an old bike, how expensive would it be, and is it a big job?

We have spent all night looking up on the superdream and have read so much good info on the bike. We would keep the bike as a second bike.

This is worth it?

thankyou in advance. Laughing

A 250cc cannot be ridden on a Provisional Licence. Even if it is restricted down to 125 power, its not possible to insure it and ride it legally. The maximum capacity allowed on a Provisional Licence is 125cc.

You may be thinking of bikes being restricted down for the A2 Restricted Licence. With that licence the rider can ride any capacity bike, but it can only make 33bhp. So the majority of the time more powerful bikes are restricted down to 33bhp.

I wouldnt worry though as there are plenty of 125's that are perfect for just getting from A to B. Maybe look into getting a cheap 125? Or maybe your partner could pass his test?

Alternatively, try getting in touch with a firm called Helphire. They will deal with the claim for you, and also provide you with a suitable hire bike until the damaged one gets repaired - bill gets sent to the liable party's insurance company.
They may need to be involved in the whole process of the claim including repairs etc to be able to help you, so if you're going to go down that route, call them ASAP while the garage are still procrastinating.

I had an excellent experience with them and can highly recommend their service. Someone knocked over my bike while parked which caused quite a bit of damage to it, I got a very nice '03 Fazer delivered to my door the very next day. When I had an embarrassing highside involving the bike cartwheeling into/across the kerb and utterly trashing it in the process, they took it away and brought me a Bandit 650 the following morning. Never charged me anything for the damage.
I also swapped that out for an '05 Fazer and an '07 SV650 while they were sorting everything out, no questions asked - I wanted to try out the different bikes, they were happy to oblige.
In the end they declared my bike a write-off (bullshit, but I wanted rid of it anyway) and gave me a cheque for the full value minus 200 quid to keep the scrap. With which I bought the bike I wanted originally but could never afford, leaving me a very happy bunny. Thumbs Up

as far as i know, the only way of restricting a CB250 to a 125 is by getting a CB125 engine and swapping that in.

then its a case of re-registering it as a 125cc, im not sure if that is even possible.
i think the CB125 engine is the only inline 2 cylinder 125cc engine around, and isnt made anymore, so will probably be rare as snake jodphurs.
