It would of been my fault and was stupid but is one of those things that you know you shouldnt do but still do...

There was a single line of traffic on one lane road and I was filtering on right hand side. There was a gap in the traffic as a car was coming out to turn right and I had to swirve pretty hard to stop it hitting me. I always watch out for this but just missed it today. The car was edging out slowly, but just wanted to let all bikers to not take it for granted and watch out for this.

Last week I nearly got hit head on by an Audi whilst filtering on the wrong side of the road with no gap to squeeze into. It was one of those 'Erk!' moments where you rely on being able to ride slowly and in a straight line to avoid dying Laughing

Which is 5x harder when the white line area is on a major camber and you end up wobbling over the top of the 'arch' as its not flat. Neutral

I could either try and brake or go faster and hope it doesnt clip me.

Lucky for me the driver was squeezing out really slowly, so I just accelerated and thought to do a emergency eject if it clipped the back of my bike..

PLease please watch out for these, I call them peeky boos. Thumbs Up

I call them "cars coming out of a junction"

Did the suspiciously large gap not give you an idea that a car may emerge?

Your fault you are not supposed to overtake (and thus filter) past junctions,

But if you do you want to filter past junctions you want to either:

Stand up on the pegs for a peek looks silly but works

Or duck down and look THROUGH cars

Look for suspiciously large gaps at junctions by looking at wheel / bumper gaps.

Look for headlamp patterns on the road in the wrong places to normal traffic travelling in the same direction as you. (works well in winter).

Look for flash reflections on cars , (easy at night)

Look on the opposite side of the road for cars if there is a solid lump of traffic on the opposite side no cars are going to come out into them (if they do you will be crushed like a bug),

If in doubt a quick tap on the brakes , to give them an initial bite = you can brake MUCH harder if the initial bite isn't too hard and thus perform a massive stoppie if something does come out,

Ride in lower gear , less fuel efficient but you can brake with the engine harder.

the gap was really tight and it is a route I have been going down the past two weeks. London Road going towards Old street station.

I should of known the road was there and I usually ride down it slowly jsut incase but was in a rush which means was going pretty fast 30mph probably.

the peeky boo was spotted too late and all i could do was go faster as braking would not have worked this morning as it was frosty as well..

Just thought I would let me fellow bikers watch out I know most of us do but a refresh always helps..

Just out of interest what would you do if someone opened their door in front of you?

funny you say that cause i saw a biker slam on while filtering the other day.

Two guys in a car decided to swap positions and opened the door while the guy was filtering. It was literally a split second and luckily the biker stopped, but your right thats something I dont really think about and I should.. always expect the unexpected as my driving instructer used to say.

Is it not the case that if a parked car opens a door out onto you and you hit it then its deemed as being their fault? Dunno if the same would apply when in stationary traffic though. If its a parked vehicle I always try and give enough room around it to anticipate that but in traffic its a bit difficult to anticipate that someone would open their door when your filtering.

On the way to work, theres a 4 lane residential 30mph road.

The left hand lane (straight one) is always gridlocked, but the right hand lane (right turn and the one im in) is always clear.

Dozy twonks in the left lane always wave out cars from the side roads into your path!

Idiots!

Oh I forgot that lights are NOT a great indicator of cars being there or wanting to come out due to the way a great many drivers think that sidelights are enough even in places like Strines moor.

That's not filtering, that's overtaking stationery traffic.
