I have to design a 2 stroke engine very similar to this one (from a goped) for my uni course, so I'm taking it apart to see all the components. I'm stuck trying to take the flywheel/fan of the crank shaft because I can't see how it's fastened on. Have you seen anything like this before? How do I get it apart?

Looks to me like it's a push-fit held in place by a piece of key-steel, have you tried pulling it off the shaft with a wide-leg bearing puller?

It'll most likely be on a tapered shaft, so basically it's held on by a b*****d tight interference fit (I see you've got the nut off...). You'll need some sort of mechanical puller to get it off.

The shaft is quite possibly tapered and the flywheel seized on so quite a bit of hammer time could be in order.

What's one of those? I haven't tried - I don't have one. Can I bodge one from something else?

It does look like a key of some kind. On the top view, you can see something that looks like its holding it on, like a circlip. I tried wacking it with a hammer and punch but it wouldn't budge.

Look for "puller" on machinemart.co.uk, you can pick one up for a few quid.

You can do a bodge- put the big nut back on, find a big piece of steel you can bolt into the two big fat holes on the flywheel each side of the crankshaft so it goes over the nut, then undo the nut. You want the nut to push the big piece of steel upwards and that should pull the flywheel with it.

Heat might get it off, never tried.

The key will drop out when the flywheel comes off. It's not actually holding anything, it's only there to locate the flywheel.

Got it apart...

I left it sitting in WD40 for a while, held it up by the flywheel and whacked the shaft with a big hammer. It was indeed a tapered shaft with a key (semi-circular key is in bottom right of picture)

I wonder how many thousands of crankshafts have been ruined by people doing that? The fine threads on the end of the shaft distort really easily making it impossible to re-fit the nut without some kind of remedial work. I've seen many ruined even when the nut has been fitted and used to protect the thread.

Just for your information, you probably knew anyway, but that type of fitting is properly called a "woodruffe key".

& as he didn't even know what a 3leg puller is & resorted to hammers to dismantle an engine I doubt he had the first fucking clue about woodruff keys...seems top have a firm grip on the principles of how to fuck up a crankshaft tho... Wink
