In a slightly hollow victory for our civil liberties, ex SAS man David Davies has won the Haltemprice and Howden by election.

Its a real shame that the cowardly government refused to field a candidate for the election, as it would have been a good impression of what the public truly feels about 42 day detention, CCTV, the DNA database etc.

As much as people dislike conservative MP's, I have to admit I admire Davis's conviction on this.

I've never really been one to worry about civil liberties, until recently when they have genuinely been threatened by this authoritarian nanny state government.

I do admire his conviction as well, however it all seems a bit hollow given even if labour had fielded a candidate, they would've been trounced purely for being a labour candidate and not necessarily on the 42 day ruling.

Looking at the choice of candidates, if I lived in the area I would have been sorely tempted to vote for Ronnie Carrol of the Make Politicians History party. Laughing

Taking a step back, on balance, I think it was a good thing to do though. I would hesitate to vote for someone who (for example) was against ID cards, the ramifications of which are going to have the biggest impact on civil liberties than anything else, (I think anyway.)

Thumbs Up

MarJay, do some digging and you'll find that Davis has surrounded himself with the very CEOs that have profited from the police state.

David Iicke ran against him because of this. Davis refused to even debate with him at all.

Thumbs Down

I'd be more impressed if I wasn't so convinced it was just a publicity stunt to get Davis back in the public eye after his woeful efforts to be the next Tory leader instead of Cameron.

While I welcome the opportunity to make labour look stupid, I do sympathise with the view that he was never at risk of losing his seat to them, and that £200,000 is a lot of taxpayer's money to have blown on a personal vanity project.

What mister james said + i like Davies better than Cameron.

But then I did like Tony blair before he became PM, and I liked Gordon Brown before he became PM, so maybe if i dont like cameron, he might actually be a good PM.

All he would have to do for me, would be not start any new wars, or bring in any new taxes.

But thats the stuff politicians like to do best, as more money makes them feel powerful, and killing foreigners makes them feel powerful. They always have great excuses as to why its necessary, but mostly its they have climbed to the top and so need to do something with their power.

Kris, David Icke is clearly a sensible and well balanced politician!

He's never claimed to be. All he's highlighted is how Davis is nothing more than a Judas goat to those against the way the country is headed. Expecting you to realise that was probably pushing it though, huh?

[edit] oh and watch that link ^^ to the vid of Icke's talk. He doesn't want any votes, just to highlight how big the Big Brother problems are and how the Conservatives will just carry the ship on it's current course...
