Been offered a bike from a friend of mine. Suzuki SV650S 2005 with 2900 miles on the clock. Been stored in garage and owned by him from new. Only done 700 miles Since May 2006 when it had its last service. Not a scratch on it, comes with immobiliser and alarm, R&G crash bobbins, huge chain and lock, alphadot security and taxed until end of April. First MOT due end of April too. Only ever done dry miles and not been ragged

Its mine for £2k. Checking it out tomorrow with a rider friend of mine who can test ride it. He's also a bike instructor so will know what to be looking for

seems very cheap to me..

Make sure you check V5`s, service history ect.

If he`s your friend and your sure it`s a sound bike, can`t see why not.

If you do buy her, make sure you get some piccys up!

Thats what I thought - seen them on Bike Trader for over £3k. It had a service in May 2006 but nothing since but only done 700 dry miles since. He said for peace of mind, put it in for service then MOT before end of April but reckons it will breeze it.

He bought a convertible last year and 'never got round' to selling his bike that he no longer uses.

Definitely genuine but I'm taking a mate to test ride it and check it all out for me but thought £2k was way too good to turn down! He lives about 5 miles from me too which is handy

Its also got Ventureguard paint protection on it? No idea what that is though! And he has owned it from new.

I'm buzzing and I havent even been to see it yet!

lol. Venture guard is like a protective layer over/in the paint, if Im correct. So the bike shouldnt scratch/wear/fade due to elements as easily.

From what I thought I remembered anyways, could be wrong, im unsure! lol

You can usually tell with a quick once over if theres anything major needed for MOT, and if you have any mechanic friends, give em a pint and ask em if they'll give it a check to see if anything needs doing. Best to be safe then pay and have to pay again Thumbs Up

Got any experience other than what youre about to do man?

I wont bombard you with cliches like "Take it easy on a powerful bike if you're only doing your DAS" or "Careful you dont kill yourself if you dont have any experience", but what I will say is this.

Enjoy the bike when you've passed Thumbs Up Wink

But dont die. And take it easy. And be careful. Laughing

I will be taking it easy thats for sure. I'm 28 and this will be first time I've riden bikes but I'm confident and I know my limits! Already been out and bought leathers and lid (£600 later!) so now just got to pass and then pick up the bike!

All my gear (two peice RST voltage leathers, shark smoke helmet, sidi boots) came to a total of about £500 also. Its mad, but at least it'll (hopefully) save our skins lol

HPI the bike before you hand any money over, although these clowns are saying its a good deal you don't want to have such a blinkered view. Usually cheap bikes are cheap for a reason.

HPI checks are £5 on the RAC website and worth every penny.

Ok, will look in to that. I know the bloke though and trust him. He only lives round the corner as well. He's only selling cos he doesnt use it, has a convertible now and I mentioned to him I was looking and he said straight away I can have his for £2500. He eventually came down to £2k as 'a favour' cos thats all I could afford

Clowns eh Phantomtek?

Cheers. I do tend to wear a lot of make-up and stupidly huge shoes. Wink

Though Id be inclined to feel a clown would read the OP and see that this is a friend of his. Which we clowns did.

And not everyone is stupid enough to think that someone that isnt closely tied could be trusted. Rolling Eyes

Yeah I bet! I reckon I can ride that for at least a year and still make a profit on it! Looking forward to having it as my first bike - what a deal!

Hi again people. Just looking at insurance for my soon to be new bike. I'm 28 and never drove or ridden before. For fully comp, the best I can find is £450. TPFT I am being quoted £145.

What would you go for? Is it worth paying the extra for fully comp or hope I dont crach in the first year and get a year of no claims under my belt?

Any advice would be great

Cheers

i was in your situation when i first started out and went down the TPFT route to build up some NCB. However, the only person that can decide is you, can you afford to put the bike back together if you bin it? or worse still replace it if you really bin it? Worse case scenario those though, you may have a trouble free year and save yourself three hundred notes Very Happy

Yeah, I know what you mean. Also, the quotes I am getting around £450 for fully comp, if you want to pay them monthly then they work out at around £550! I might just go TPFT I think and just hope I dont bin it!

id be inclined to go tpft on a bike thats cost you under 2k and owned outright by you. id only be tempted to go fully comp if it was on finance or worth more than i could afford to loose.

Why spend a quarter of your bikes purchase price on insurance?

If you claim on your own insurance, you will lose NCB and your insurance will be more expensive for a year or so.

Also you will quite a high excess I imagine.

Bikes are cheap to fix usually. Go TPFT.
