Got a 70 on the front just now and replacing it on Saturday. Heard a few people say that a 70 is better than a 60, but mechanic in a Yamaha dealer said get a 60 put on it. I've not had front replaced before so a 70 is all I have experienced. A bit confused and as I'll be riding through winter thought I'd seek some more opinions.

Thanks in advance.

PS - will be Michelin Pilot 2CT back & front.

hi, in Ride magazine the recommended you use a 70 to gain some more front end feel but as a compromise Pirelli Diablo Corsa's which come in a 65
Hope this is some help Smile

A 70 on the front will make the bike steer slightly slower than a 60. I changed from a 120/60 to a 120/70 in the front of my 748 and the difference is very noticeable, the bike doesn't dive into the corners and the handling overall is less aggressive. Make sure you don't have any clearance issues with the front mudguard when the tyre is hot and picking up gravel.

I much prefer the 70 I've recently fitted to mine. Bigger footprint is much prefered in these conditions for me - I've got a lot more mid-corner composure/confidence with the new fitment. Rate of turn is marginal, I haven't got into summer scratching yet, but the R6 turns with ease anyway.

Stick with the 70 profile for the reasons already mentioned - do not even bother contemplating going back to a 60. I can guarantee that you would regret it if you did.

And just because the guy is a mechanic at a Yamaha dealer it doesn't automatically follow that he knows best and he will most likely be quoting the original stock size as being 'best'. He might be a whizz at fixing the things, but has he ever owned one and put sufficient miles on it with different profile tyres - I doubt it.

Thanks for your replies.

So the general consensus is stick to the 70. Was reading through some previous posts on here and a few have suggested adjusting fork/yoke height to compensate for a 70. Is this really necessary?

I always get advised to go back to 'proper' sizes whenever I get quotes for tyre's. I never would though, feels so much better how it is. I think they're just trying to cover their own backs though really, I usually end up signing a disclaimer to say I've requested bigger sizes :shrugs:

Well this is very much a matter of personal opinion as all suspension settings are. There is no single one 'best' setting that suits everyone, just the basic standard factory settings that give you a rough guide to start from.

The general concensus where the R6 is concerned is that when changing to a 70 profile on a 99-02 bike it is highly desirable to adjust the fork height to compensate, where as on the 03-04 bikes there is a mixed view as to whether it is better to adjust the height or leave it as it is as it is still okay to ride.

There is a really good "how to" thread on one of the R6 forums on exactly this subject. I'm sure someone has the link. Cool

On my 99 R6, I went from a 60 (diablo) to a 70 (supercorsa) profile tyre as of yet I haven't adjusted the mudguard, I will be in the near future as there's bugger all clearance between the tyre and the mudguard.

Didn't drop the front forks to compensate, just jacked the rear end up to keep the steering as sharp.

That of course is another popular method of adjusting the suspension back to similar parameters to the stock settings when stepping up tyre profiles.

Although it has to be said that some people do not advocate this method as you firstly raise the front end by fitting a taller tyre and then you raise the back end to compensate for this. Thus you end up with a bike sitting higher off the ground than normal.

I'm not saying this is good or bad, just passing on other peoples thoughts on the subjuct. Decisions, decisions...

Hi,
Im looking to put a new set of tyres on my 03 r6 and have been considering going upto the 70 profile on the front. Craig I see I have the same vintage r6 as you, was just wondering how you are getting on since putting a 70 profile on it?

Did you have to adjust the front mudguard or raise the forks?

Is this really a worth while mod?

Thanks.
