Hotwiring an SV650

Hi folks,

Some of you may remember my thread about my stolen (then recovered) '04 SV650.

Well I spent about 3 hours today stripping the front end and hacksawing off the steering lock that the thieves had left on (with no keys found).

Obviouslly I plan to fit a new lock set but in the meantime I'd like to spark the engine up as I have concerns it won't work in some way - and I'd rather not spend cash on new locks if the engine is buggered.

Anyhow Mr. Haynes suggests that there are 4 wires, and that I connect red to orange, and orange w/ dots to green.

Unfortunately in practice there are 5 wires, as described above but with another red one. The electrics come on but the fuel pump only whirs for a split second. The engine won't therefore fire.

Am I missing something?

I'm wondering if a fuse is blown but I can't open the bloody seat (again, keys stolen) to check!

The spare wire that isn't in the manual is the anti hot-wire feature. You cannot start the bike by twisting wires (unless you know what to do with that wire), you must use the ignition assembly.

Is that spare wire looking for a particular resistance value or something?

The red wire may be connected to a sensor coil for the immobiliser. If you still have the ignition assembly connect that wire and a ground to it, hold the key near to it and then fire it up with the other wires, sounds odd but it worked on my Escort. It's probably to allow the sensor to read the immobiliser chip on the key. This is assuming the SV even has an immobiliser of that sort.

You will find that there a resistor in the ignition, so shorting the wires to earth won't work. If it were that easy immobilisers would be too easy to overcome. You need the ignition assembly, find the resistor and measure its value (typically 100K).

I've done a few one off wiring looms for customs/ choppers and have come across this problem before when replacing the ignition switch for a simple on-off one.
