Well, I have a 1980 TS50ER that i bought in many boxes, after seeking a few new bits and make everything look respectable i put it back together a few months ago and still havent got it to run yet..

Had another go today, as i recently picked up an old ts50er from ebay that had been from a police impound so worth it for parts.

Eliminated so far...

Spark (Ive always been getting a spark but to be fair it was a bit on the fluffy side, and sometimes flashed orange and always looked to be white to me. So, today i fitted a new magneto and stator off the other bike after cleaning the points etc. and the spark was dramatically improved, smaller, blue-er, stronger and generally more ''normal'' to what i have seen from other bikes, So i thing it is safe to eliminate this.)

Carb (Thouroughly cleaned and adjusted many times, and to check even tried one from other bike. Mixture screw set and checked, good float bowl etc. etc.)

Compression (Always comes back on compression tester at around 140-145 psi, so safe to say no problems here. As for seals, all new and tight after re-build.)

Air (Not to sure about this really, but i have an air filter that has a new foam element and is correctly located and fastened so im guessing it should be ok)

Fuel (I changed the fuel not so long ago just to be on the safe side, but the carb fills up nicely, it is getting drawn into the chamber, the plug always has fuel on after i take it out after many kicks/bump starts, so once again i can not see any problems here)

Timing (Ok, i had quite a bit of an issue here when i first came to tackling it as i had never done it before so i thought it there was way more involved than there actually is so i wasnt sure on what was to be done and what i had to move etc, but after some help and reading up some more i found out and had it double checked, and the points now open to the correct amount and at the correct amount of degress BTDC etc. etc. So again, all good here i assume.)

Other (As a matter of course, I double checked everything like spark plug, coil, any air leaks and what have you. I have checked time and time again every small thing that i could think of. Including trying easystart on a couple of occasions whitch did little to improve it and warming the plug on the cooker etc. etc.)

I honestly do now think that there could be something fundamentally wrong as opposed to a simple error as no matter what i try it wont catch on..

I have bumped it many times on long distances and it sounds like it wants to go but just does not catch on at all, theres even smoke coming from the exhaust on some occasions and then from the plug hole when i take the plug out.

To give you a bit of an idea, here is what the bike sounded like this afternoon..

.......................................................................................................................

ONE THING I NOTICED! As this is the first bike i have had to work on properly, I havent experienced what a 'normal' magneto should feel when you turn it. The only reason i thought this as when i turned the mag on the donor bike it felt VERY smooth and spun without effort and when i took it off, you could turn the shaft easily with your hand. However, On my bike the mag was quite stiff and stuck in certain places as if it was getting a little bit tight. And then when the mag was off you coud JUST about turn the shaft with your hand as it was very tight. I am unaware what is normal when it comes to this, and wether it would make any difference but its kind of a last resort and the last thing i can think of. So when i took the mag off the old bike and put it on mine, it was quite alot easier to spin, but obviously the shaft was still the same, could the crankshaft be too tight (maybe a build of something on it?) But like i say i am too inexperienced to make a decision. What effect would a tight crankshaft have, if any?

Thanks to any one that read this, Any advice or ideas no matter how silly they may seem would be very helpful. Thanks.

Hi mate,

How do you mean 'twisted crank'..?

What, if any, effect would it have on the engine starting, Would it make it not start at all, and sound like mine does?

Ive got this spares ts50 engine ya see, and the way the crankshaft turned so easily on that one made me wonder about mine..

Thanks.
