Basically insertion fees are to be cheaper.

But you pay more if it actually sells. Rolling Eyes

Also if you have less than 100 feedback you HAVE to offer PayPal as a payment option. Funny how PayPal is the same fricking company as Ebay.

What if you want to sell a motorbike on ebay and you have less than 100 feedback? Stupidity, the amount in PayPal fees alone, not counting the insertion fee would make it ridiculous.

New fees are here: - https://web.ebay.co.uk/selling/

Looks like the ebay fees alone take 10% of the final selling price, not counting PayPal fees.

It's becoming beyond a joke now, this sector needs competition as the monopoly is getting ridiculous.

that paypal thing is ridiculous, I suppose the way round it when listing something expensive is to add "I'll knock £xx(xx)/chuck xxx in off if you pay in cash"

Found freeads better for wheeled things lately.

eBAY is great for some things, dire for other things.

If buying a vehicle i thought it was the done thing to pay on collection, and end the listing so you dont pay as much. Wink

Same with anything really, start screwing Ebay, it's the only way. They've made enough money now to help out the average Joe, instead they are grabbing at opportunities.

The problem is, there is no real alternative, and nothing will change, and people will continue to use ebay.

I sell the odd peice of crap on there to clear space from the garage, but I do it because otherwise it'd just be taking up space in my garage. I'd never sell anything I value on ebay!

However I buy shit loads on ebay, and that's where the other half of the problem lies, you need to get people to stop buying, to stop it being worth while to sell.

What's the betting we see a Google Auction site popping up at some point?

I noticed that Paypal actually charge you for withdrawing money now, has this always been the same? The amount of charges is ridiculous.
The annoying thing is, is that there's probably not going to be any competition for ebay for some time & even if there is, it'll take years to build up which obviously forces buyers back to ebay.
I reckon Amazon is big enough to have a go.

Hi

Oh well, one way for Ebay to commit suicide.

No doubt it will hasten along the arrival of some solid competition.

Hardly like it is technically difficult to set up an auction site and plenty have the money to advertise and get it well known.

All the best

Keith

I've been on a few auction sites which i'm guessing have to be the biggest ones after ebay & they're just all dead, they're high up on page rank so everyone who searches for auction sites can see but obviously ebay has just got that hold on the market at the moment.
This is why i think you'd need to have an already big company that has millions of regular users like Amazon or as Joe said, Google. I think it'd take too long for an unknown company/name to to compete with ebay, even with mass marketing.

If that did happen, what's the chances that ebay/Paypal will lower their fees?

If somebody does manage to get a reasonable market share 3 things will happen:

take over

gentlemen's agreement ie price fixing (even big companies do this).

price war which again ends up in monopoly once the opposition is destroyed.

Remember Google has Google Checkout already up and running - their payment system.

Hopefully a decent competitor would get fees right down.

Obviously this hasn't gone un-noticed, just found this, pretty small at the moment but it's a start i suppose. Smile

Hundreds of eBay customers have signed a petition that urges search giant Google to launch a rival auction site.

Just read that apparently ebay is the biggest adwords user for Google, so i guess as long as ebay are advertising, Google won't do anything to upset them.

I've just been thinking about this and i'm surprised the competitions commission have never had anything to say about ebay, as it is a blatant monopoly.

Thing with ebay, everyone automatically assumes they will be the cheapest, so buy from them.

Ive seen used books on there for sale, which are cheaper at play.com for a new copy.

People dont look around when buying, just go straight to ebay 'knowing' it will be the cheapest.

Obviously you do get the odd bargain.

Spot on.

I always research prices elsewhere before even considering buying off ebay. So many people don't even bother...
