Anything up to redline a car engine was designed to do.

Hitting the redline often won't do it too much harm, but make sure you change the oil more often.

Most won't let you take them into the red anyway, either by restriction or fuel cut off.

Anyway it's pointless, peak power and torque drop off someway before redline.

Absolutely, unless you have the annoyingly geared Vectra GSI 2.5 V6 which you had to redline otherwise when you changed gear it was way out of the powerband! Evil or Very Mad

I think going to the redline is ok. Once you're there, change gear dont keep on dinking off the limiter.

Do it too often without allowing the engine to warm up properly and it WILL go bang eventually.

I imagine your mum wont be best pleased if her car breaks down due to the abuse you have been giving it. Do it your own vehicle if you want but treat hers with a little more respect.

I used to rag all my little cars.

I had an indicated 110 out of my punto, flat out.

Then some chick overtook me in a 1.3 and stuck her tongue out at me Crying or Very sad

I felt that leaning forward and forcing the gas pedal down harder even though it wouldn't go any further would make me gain enough speed to overtake her back Laughing

I was punching the air to get it to go faster and screaming "Come on!"

Oh man, good times.

Same as a bike, if it's warmed up properly it should be fine.

I used to hammer my Mum's Corsa(1.2 blud! Laughing ) and not my dad's focus, I think there's something about small engined cars that means you HAVE to hammer them. Laughing

Not always. My Passat's redline is just a tad over 6k and peak power is 6k. Thumbs Up

But your car has been built for power to be used.

A fiesta won't have. Razz

On a relatively modern engine I don't think it'll do any harm, however your fuel economy will take a hit and you may not get any extra performance anyway, depending on what sort of engine it is.

Remember, an RS125 is a tuned two-stroke designed to be thrashed, I'd hazard a guess that your car is a small hatchback that's meant to be driven a lot more sedately.

I've got a Focus and that doesn't even HAVE a red line! lol. Though I tend to go by what it feels like and sounds like rather than the dials.
If I remember correctly the dials end on 7k but I've never gone past 6k, 4k is my average personal limit - unless I'm doing a severe overtake which then takes me to 5-5.5k. Never had any prob's with the engine, though I'm revving less and less as it gets older.

However I am planning on selling it in about 6 months... Twisted Evil

I don't even have a rev counter in my Fiesta Laughing Red line? Anyone's guess, but I know peak power is only at about 5500rpm (with no rev counter this is attained just before the engine sounds and feels strained) as it's a pushrod engine which doesn't like revving. Good torque though.

If you must redline something that won't get you there particularly quickly anyway, make sure it's fully warmed up and don't do it too often.

No it ain't.

The red line is the maximum speed at which the engine can operate without causing damage.

The limiter is an electronic device which prevents you from reaching that speed. You can still overrev if, for instance, you drop into too low a gear.

I only redline now and again, and it does in more opinion my good than harm. Blows the shite out of the engine!

Though I don't redline it that often as my fuel economy is dire if I do! And I don't like getting less than 25mpg!!
