My Dad's a mechanic and has his own yard in north London, he keeps his bike in one of his garages there and has not had any problems. I can ask him later if he's got room in the garage to keep it for about 5 months and for how much if you want?

Or you can contact your local council and see if they have any garages available to rent. They are extremely cheap.

And extremely easy to break into and set fire to, and that happens a lot.

How exactly is it any more easy to break into than a regular garage? Do they make council garages out of something different to regular garages? Rolling Eyes

You can fit your own security, it is your own responsibility to secure the garage, not the councils.

Right ok, council garages are normally bunched together, normally on or close to council estates, you can rent any of these and you don't get a preference to what garage you get, you ask for an area you would like and when one is available its offered to you.

Being mainly on or near council estates there are plenty of bored kids who break into and set fire to them.

Its a common sight, far more common than seeing private garages attatched to houses with no doors or burn't out.

Is that satisfactory?

Not really. I see your point about the fact that some of them do get broken into/burnt. I just don't see the problem with buying decent locks.

I pay £5 a week for a garage that I rent, I got a garage that is on the back of some flats, there are about 30/40 there in total. Given the fact I save about a fifth of the money I would renting it privately, I don't really have any qualms about spending money on decent locks.

The only ones I have seen vandalised or damaged are garages that have been sitting empty for ages where the only protection from stopping people getting in is a rusty lock that someone fitted years ago.

I think it is complete bullshit to say that if you have one, its likely that it will be set on fire. Most councils have thousands of garages to rent, how many exactly get burnt?

Locks are good for stopping break ins, but they don't stop fire.

Well thats good then. But they normally have a shitty weak roof designed to do nothing more than keep rain out, most of the garages I have seen burning have the doors still upright and locked.

In shoeburyness in Southend, it can be up to 4 or 5 a month I have seen. I cant tell you the rest of the country as I have not lived everywhere. My point to the original poster is there to help in his choice of somewhere to leave his bike for long periods of time, with my experience of council garages leaving something sitting for a long period of time is not good as it will probably end up nicked or burned, you even said yourself that the ones you have seen have been left empty for a while. How did the people vandalising them know they were empty? Did they assume they were empty as no one had been near them for a while?

Hence not the best option for long term bike storage.

Depends when you're going to Marrakech (I'm off there on wednesday for a wee holiday!). I rent out a space in a secure garage in Kilburn but there's no spaces available.....at the moment. £50 a month he charges, thikn the scooter lad is set to move out soon.

Let me know when you need it for.

Fair point. I did forget that quite a lot of them have corrugated roofing. I was lucky enough to get one with a solid roof, it may well be worth applying for one and seeing what you get.

The only reason I mentioned this anyway was because of the lack of decent places to store it, it would certainly be better than leaving it out on a road/driveway for 4/5 months even if it were just for the condition of the bike in general.

The reason I assumed the garages most likely to be vandalised were unused because they are the ones with the worst upkeep. The council are useless with maintaining if no one is on their backs about it so if someone does decide to run across the roofing and it cracks/becomes damaged there is no one to complain and have the council repair it.

Have a look on Gumtree or something as well, plenty of private garages for rent. The only problem there is making sure the person you are renting it off is trustworthy.
