Hoping you can help here. Lowsided on way home and put a hole in casing. Bike has leaked a lot of petrol and oil. I get oil volume/temp warnings. The engine will run but I'm worried this hole is going to cost a fortune.

Swingarm R&G took big hit but didn't protect everything.

Is there anything I can do to nurse the bike along as I need it for getting to work.

Not a great pic but you get the idea. You can see the pool of oil at the bottom right.

Thanks guys,

Graeme

First Line of call for a leakage,
Disconnect your fuel line/tap
So to no more leakage while adhering
Clean your surface like your casing.
Pop to your local motorfactors sooner rather than later, and pick up some "Hematite" sealer, or a similar sealer that is oil & petrol resistant, and seal up that whole throughly before it leaks out.

To be honest you might get a good seal on it, although its detracting from looks, and might not be a perminant seal.

Hope this helps somewhat.

Personally I'd only use the bike if you are prepared to buy a new engine for it.

Get it repaired with a new casing and then ride it.

Even sealing it with chemical metal or other sealants may cause trouble, because if a piece of sealant or casing breaks off inside the engine you're looking at catastrophic failure.

My old TT600 had a minute chunk missing out of the crankcase but there was no external damage so I rode it once it was all up together. Big mistake. The engine dropped a valve within ten minutes of firing it up and the engine became a huge paperweight.

Personally I can understand why someone has a 400cc shonker as their only transport, but a 150mph sportsbike seems a little odd. Particularly if you can't get the bus, or the train or a taxi or what have you. I used to have a Triumph Daytona 955 as my only vehicle, but I didn't need it to get to work, I could get the bus or the train.

What happens when your bike needs a service?

Just need a new engine casing (plus gasket) and job done.

Its a 10 minute job and that includes you getting the tools out as well.

Similar to the damage that I had with my crash on the FZR. Although the majority of oil spilled all over the road the engine turned and fired as there was still a nice residual knocking about.

Don't worry about the any petrol as most bikes leak a little when on their sides.

From the pic, I'd guess a 1999-2000 R6.

Make a gasket out of plastic and put it on the inside of the casing till you get it repaired properly??

That's a guess that I pulled out of my a*s, but if it works then Thumbs Up Very Happy
(You may want to put the bike on it's side when fitting it so as not to loose too much oil)
Good luck!!

as its a carbed R6 petrol leaks when a bike is on its side as the petrol leaks out of the overflow no worries, as slong as it doesnt leak now whilst upright? Also check your carbs are still sitting on the engine right, i decked my bike a few weaks into owning it and the carb lifted off, then again FZRs are weak with carb sitting.
Just give it a good rummage over, stop all the leaks and see how it goes from there.

First, if the oil light is coming on, do not run the engine until you have put more oil in!

If the hole is not too big, you can effect a temporary repair with this:
https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PLUMBERS-REPAIR-PUTTY-LEAK-PIPE-RADIATOR-SETS-IN-WET_W0QQitemZ160211594384QQihZ006QQcategoryZ3191QQcmdZViewItem
You can get it from any plumbers merchant and most DIY stores. Will take 2 bar of pressure. Follow the instructions explicitly.

Temporary meaning days, not months.

Looks like it's a bit late for that.... Rolling Eyes He's already ran it low on oil AND overheated it.... Shocked I give it 500 miles (max!) before Mr Conrod says hello to Mr Crankcase.... Wink
Probably won't last long enough to get thru a tank of petrol tho...

& I absolutely can NOT believe some of the fuckwitted suggestions in this thread....seriously guys, I'd tell you to go throw your tool boxes in the nearest canal.. but I doubt many of you actually have one...

I can weld it up for you if required ... I take it your up here in Gods end of the country ... just PM me.

How low did your oil get ... as long as there was enough left to lubricate bearings etc. then you'll be ok ... you'll find out soon enough when you start running about on the bike again!!

You can run low on oil but get away without doing any damage ... it's just your luck depending on how low the oil got.

Chemical Metal is usally quite good at sealing leaks for a while, but it won't hold forever ... the only way is to weld the casing and then look for a new one.

All the best ... Barry

You say that, but after my little shindig where I lost all but a litre of oil out the cracked engine casing when my friend smashed it it was running on the floor for about a minute til I could get to it so I rode it a further 5 miles to his house on very little oil (knowing full well it could seize at any moment but assuming the damage was done) and it was fine. Fixed it and chucked new oil in, 2000 miles later running better than it was before.

Although obviously I just got lucky.

^^^^ Not true ... I had no choice but to ride a bike 40ish miles with the low oil pressure light going on and off ... engine was fine after I'd refilled her ... as I said it all depends on the engine, how low the oil was and luck.

Also, on some bikes it's not a low pressure oil light, it's a low level oil light (ala Vmax) ... rebuilt a Vmax engine for a mate last year and was running about on it for a few days to make sure it was ok ... feckin oil light kept on coming on everytime I hit the brakes hard (or was it pulling away hard??), due to the oil surging to the front (or back) of the sump.

Anyway, no point in arguing whether it is or is not fecked ... only way to find out is to run (or strip) it Thumbs Up

All the best ... Barry

Many 1100 Kaw's will go for 4000-6000 miles after being dropped before they ventilate the cases.... usually the #3 rod lets go first.
It's not a case of "if".. it's "when"......
