timing ? as in the engine, piston reaching the top of its compression stroke and the spark plug releasing a spark, that timing?
or why it decided to stop running at the very moment you were at the lights??

the back fire may have eaten your spark plug, get a new one and try again, you'd be surprised how many times the simple spark plug is the cause of motorcycle gremlins

why do you need to set the timimg?
valve timing or ignition?
ignition is pre set so leave it alone!

if the timing is pre- set electronically, why would it start to play up like this when i pulled up at the lights, when i rolled up and stopped with out any problems, then, as it ticked over, the engine just stopped, and then i tryed to start it on the starter, and with no joy, so i tryed to bump it with no joy, then ran out of battery power, so i put jump leeds on then it tryed to start and ran (not very well) for a couple of seconds, and died again, then tryed again and it back-fired and shot a flame out of the exhaust 2 foot long? so what else can it be? all info well receaved by me as to what it could be

if it was points you could adjust them, its not its cdi, nothing to adjust, all self contained.
Do you have a spark?
If you dont and you have changed the spark plug check your cdi unit or the cdi trigger / pick-up.

stupid question, you do have fuel in it?
what were you doing before you pulled up at the lights, playing off road, wheelieing etc, did it do anything else before it packed up, ANYTHING, there has to be a reason no matter how small or insignificant, need ALL INFO

Other than lack of fuel it might be dirt in the carb or a stuck float valve. Maybe even a blocked air filter. I would certainly look at the fuelling and spark plug before anything else.

this is'nt my day.... i've just put the bike back together with a new spark plug, i've chequed the fuel and i've got a newish air filter in it and i tryed to start it but it still fails to start but back fires still the same...... if it back fires, it must not be firing when the stroke of the piston is at its point to fire? dose this make any sence to anyone apart from me?

lol, a back fire is not any sort of indicator to the timing being out and its been said already its preset in the cdi, its not like cars with a distributor and a rotor and a set of points,
you just have a set of pick ups which tell the cdi what position the crank is, and the cdi then gives some voltage to the coil.
if its not your spark plug or your carb, the next thing to look at is the valve clearances.
have fun Very Happy

yeh, lovlly, not.... i know this is daft but could the oil thickness make any diffrence... the day before i last took it out, i chequed the oil and water but the oil leavel was a little low so i used a 15/40 instead of a 10/40, i know im barking up the wrong tree but?

No its not the oil.

If you want to be sure about the timing then you need to check the pickups and the CDI. The problem is that the only way I know how to check the CDI is to swap for another?

another frustrated couple of days, i've had the rocker cover off to see the timing marks which are spot on so replaced every thing and now i've got the carb off and cleaned it up, im going to replace all the breather and over flow pipes while im in here, but still cant see anything wrong or damaged. Im in two minds to strip the carb down but i hate working on carbs, they are a mine field as far as i can see... will let you all know of my pending balls-up
I have found this site if it helps any of you with the same problems as me www.pegmonkey.com/howto/valve_ajust/drz400
