Generally glue will come off quite adequately with methylated spirits. Not too sure about your particular glue, though, and how the spirits will affect the tank - although you did say it is being redone anyway.

Have no idea whether my method is any better, but great for removing the decals.

You get the idea:

The aim of today...remove the gunk and glue.

You will need the following:

Arrow A gentle heat source such as a hair dyer
Arrow WD40 (I also used some white spirit on the pad but not the bike as I'm a chicken)
Arrow A cloth

Time: 30 minutes

I don't have power in the garage but I do have a swanky little gas powered soldering iron that has different attachments; soldering, hot knife, blow heater and gas welding flame. So with the blow heater on and fired I tried a test piece on the back of the pad and all was good so moved onto the tank.

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/p1010003_166.jpg

There wasn't much gunk on the tank to be honest it was all on the pad but what was left was a very stuck down adhesive backing for the aforementioned gunk.

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/p1010006.jpg

The blow heater was just enough to lift the edges to start either rolling or rubbing with a thumb or finger. I started off being a little too cautious as not to burn the tank but after a while I realised that an inch was a safe distance as long as the flame kept moving.

Patience was the order of the day and little by little the tape backing was removed.

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/p1010010.jpg

With my glue residue on most of my digits smudging any clean surface dirty again I reached for the WD40 as recommended by 8/10 BCFers.

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/p1010013_190.jpg

This with a small amount of elbow grease removed all the residue and highlighted the odd little areas that had previously been missed. So the heater out again all the odds and sods were picked off.

All thats now left to do is get some adhesive backing and stick the pad on the tank for real.

Top tip:

Arrow Don't cut your fingernails the day of the scraping as it makes it a little hard to get hold off all those little edges. Mad

The tank is like a block of ice after so makes the ride a little 'interesting' to say the least. Laughing

Or do like the professionals do Wink
get a sticker remover solution...
or
use a high degreaser, and a hot air gun
similar to Whosthedaddy's way. but a tiny but less likely to set your tank on fire Laughing

ZRX61 - haha, fisheyes are the new thing, i want to see some on paint, we havnt fucked it up yet to get to see any =[

Easiest way is just peel off the asticker & wipe the glue off with laquer thinner, it won't harm Kawasaki paint, nor the others AFAIK.

Just use a hair dryer to remove the sticker and then some petrol or tar and glue remover to get rid of the residual glue. Like said above you could use laquer thinner but this is not recommended to use on anything other than a modern factory paint job and could damage that if left on for prolonged periods! It doesn't really matter if your respraying it though.

If the paint on the tank is in good order and your just wanting to change the colour then you can just flat the paint of with a plastic pan scourer. This will give something for the paint to stick to. Then apply at least 3 coats of paint and finish of with a clear coat to get a great shine.

If the paint is chipped and marked then use some medium and fine paper to remove these imperfections. Then paint as above.

I personally would strip it back down to bare metal, fine sand, etch prime, paint, clear coat. Depends how keen on perfection you are.

KEEP ANY FORM OF POLISH AWAY FROM THE PAINTWORK AS THEY CONTAIN SILICONE AND WILL WRECK YOUR NEW PAINT
