hi all,
having a go at my first respray.
using a gravity fed hvlp gun.
done a couple of coats of primer & im now on the basecoat.
but paint is spluttering out of the little breather outlet on the lid of paint bottle.
does this mean the paint is too thick or too thin?
cheers,
GAZ

Sounds daft, but take the gun apart and clean it! Also you might want want to try turning down the regulator on the compressor a bit.

Dont want to make you sound dumb mate,
but i havnt been doing this long and one of the rules of doing it, is always keep to the ratio given on the paint can.

Otherwise it turns out a bit dodgey even if you get coverage,
and are you saying paints coming out of your breather hole at the top of the gun cup?

If thats true the only time ive heard of that happening is when the aircap isnt on tight. and the nozzle as well.

Edit:
whats your setup too?
maybe you havnt got the right aircap etc for running primer as its different.
What gun make and model have you got
what compressor is driving it.

hi,
guns been stripped & cleaned.
working fine now.
didnt have a measuring jug, so was adding a little thinners at a time, till it got manageable.(i did pay attention to the ratio on can, but was advised that this is only a guide & depends on which basecoat im using, but turned out to be more or less what it said on tin!)
it was too thick & too full.
once i took some out, added a little thinners , it was fine.
using a cheap 25l challenger compressor,
hvlp gun off ebay.
coming on fine!
another coat of basecoat, then onto clearcoat (which is the one im most worried about! -want to get the mix right - clearcoat/hardner/thinners & i dont want to f**k it up!)
wish me luck,
cheers,
GAZ

Was going to post this in the other thread but here will do,
you should keep exactly to the ratio, thats the optimum for the paint, will say on each tin,
If i remember rightly its
Paint/primer - Thinner - Hardner
but check your tin as i cant remember,
if you dont you'll make it harder for yourself by making the clearcoat and that not the exact viscocity (thickness) it needs, which either gives you runs or clogs up your gun.

O right im thinking of purchasing a compressor for home so cheers,
want to pm the link to a gun like yours?, intrested to know what setup the guns using.
Cheers
And good luck
Will be expecting pics posted when its back on the bike Cool

For future ref: The tip wasn't screwed on tight enough.... so the air percolates back thru the cup.

Thinners with clearcoat? wtf for? The correct mix is the cc & the catalyst, no thinning needed. It's supposed to go on a tad thick, thats why you only need 3 coats max.
