PostPosted: 17:15 - 26 Feb 2008    Post subject: My £400 TZR 125 project! First bike Reply with quote

After many months of waiting and wanting, I finally bought myself my first motorbike. I scoured Ebay for weeks until I found a nice sports bike for right on my budget of £400.

This is what I bought:)

https://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/lotrs/TZR125/S5032343.jpg

Of course I had to get my bird on it
https://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/lotrs/TZR125/S5032351.jpg
https://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/lotrs/TZR125/S5032349.jpg

I got to work giving it a scrub and a clean up, as the fork seals needed doing and it had a few electrical problems (as all old 2 strokes do). I also fitted some new indicators and mirrors.

And then the other week some pikey wankers decided they wanted it and stole it from my driveway. The police found it and Auto Renovations charged me £150 for recovery and storage at their local depot. Turns out the bike was found 2 minutes up the road. Why they didn't phone me so I could collect it myself I don't know..

Anyway I got it back, not too bad a state. Few broken bits here and there. Seems they hotwired it and ragged it around a field for a while. It was covered in fingerprint dust too lol.

https://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/lotrs/TZR125/S5032508.jpg

I thought hey at least I have it back, and decided I might as well strip it down and give it a proper good clean. So I got to work..
https://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/lotrs/TZR125/S5032507.jpg
https://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/lotrs/TZR125/S5032509.jpg
https://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/lotrs/TZR125/S5032511.jpg

The frame was filthy so I gave that a quick clean up, but it will need doing again before everything goes back together.
https://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/lotrs/TZR125/S5032521.jpg

I needed to fit a new speedo drive I ordered, and get the fork seals done so I set about taking the forks off. The wheel took me ages as the pinch bolt is really confusing lol. The wheels I want to get resprayed and cleaned up anyway as the paint is all flaking off.
Note my fantastic set up to get the front wheel off th ground:P
https://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/lotrs/TZR125/S5032520.jpg
https://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/lotrs/TZR125/S5032522.jpg
https://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/lotrs/TZR125/S5032525.jpg
https://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/lotrs/TZR125/S5032524.jpg

The new speedo drive has not made a difference, however I can see the new cable turning at the speedo end, yet the speedo itself still doesnt move, I will take apart the instruments to have a closer look as I want to spray them white anyway and replace the bulbs.

I also took the forks off as I am waiting for my AutoSol to arrive so I can clean them off a bit. I need to take them to get the seals done too as I don't fancy my chances at that.
https://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/lotrs/TZR125/S5032530.jpg
https://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/lotrs/TZR125/S5032532.jpg
https://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/lotrs/TZR125/S5032529.jpg

I am waiting delivery for a new pair of levers, wiring loom, complete stainless nuts and bolts pack and a K&N Air Filter.
I went to clean out my air filter while it was off, to find the lack of filter in the air box! My carbs may need cleaning if a bunch of dirt and shit has got into them.

But that is how my bike stands so far, hopefully it won't take me too long to get it back to prestine condition.

No you see it was the one night I stupidly left it unlocked. I certainly have learnt my lesson.
It really is good experience and fun, but quite costly:(

Its gonna be a good summer I think. We just both need to have our bikes built before its here! Laughing

Awesome dude, I will need you to do the wiring loom for me cos that will be a right pain in the arse. I will have to take it to a shop for the seals I think.

While I was waiting for my parts during the week I set about cleaning up the speedo as it was covered in marks and scratches. Also I want to spray the plastic part white to match the bike and get rid of the old boring grey.
I found out however that you cannot buy spray paint until you are 21! Looks like a job for the mother:P

The speedo surround looks alot cleaner and newer now but needs finishing off still

https://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/lotrs/TZR125/S5032537.jpg

Today I also got my levers and AutoSol through the post Very Happy
I have been up Silverstone race circuit all day though so I only got chance to try out the AutoSol.

I tell you something, it is MAGIC stuff.
A quick rub on my forks and it really cleaned them up and gave them a nice shine.

This is a comparison between one I gave a quick clean up and one before
https://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/lotrs/TZR125/S5032546.jpg

And them both looking how they should:)

Yep Autosol is good stuff man!
Its like liquid sand paper, So keep the stuff on the forks while your rubbing it in to them. dont put it on and polish it straight back off. Thumbs Up

Go on, You know you want to get cracking on the fork legs too! Cool

The side on pic of that reminds me so much of mine, They must have been designed along side or something when it comes to plastics. What year is it?

Looks nice in a cream/red too. Thumbs Up

The bike is an '89 model I do believe, I reckon it still looks pretty modern considering its only a year younger than me.

The frame is a gorgeous colour I agree, and really does stand out.

Fraid not mate, I started my new job this week so I haven't had much time. I have a day off tomorrow so I'll get cracking and whack some photos up.
I had to pay for the wiring loom through postal order so there's a delay getting hold of that.
Need to get that in as soon as cos it was one of the main problems.

Just a quick update for today.. didn't get an awful lot done just a few cosmetic things really.

Got myself a nice new shiny air filter and stuck it on today.. might get a short piece of induction pipe from work for a better fit but it'll do for now.
https://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/lotrs/TZR125/S5032549.jpg
https://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/lotrs/TZR125/S5032548.jpg

Also put my new levers on. Nothing special just replaced the bent scratched ones that were on before.
The more I take the bike apart the more it looks to me like it has been binned, or at least dropped quite badly on one side.
https://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/lotrs/TZR125/S5032550.jpg

And the rest really was just a bit more polishing and getting rid of some rust here and there. Also replaced a few screws here and there with some nice new shiny ones:)
https://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y119/lotrs/TZR125/S5032551.jpg

Half of the work I have done on it were not planned and I keep finding small niggly things as I go.
Once the wiring loom is here and in I will start to put it all back together and get it on the road!

Cheers for the nice words!
It is my first project so it's a really interesting thing to do and have learnt a hell of a lot about my bike.

Depending on what your plans are and what funds you have, a bike can easily be rebuilt quite quickly, I just keep running out of money and having to wait until I get paid lol.

I stuck a new spark plug in and got out the T-Cut to tidy up the paintwork. Also have a new tank coming as mine was dented.
Just waiting for the wiring loom to get delivered and then pay day to get the forks done.

Then it just goes all back together! Which will be the fun bit :/

Hey gaz, I have the same bike and after the wind blew it down I need some new front indicators. I was wondering what type you have on the front of yours and they look great as a replacement.

The exact same happened to mine hence why I got new indicators.

Having such a light bike does have its disadvantages I guess Thumbs Down

I got the indicators brand new off ebay, there is a guy that sells them.

Here is the link:
https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/mini-indicators-FOR-YAMAHA-r1-r6-yzf-fzr-xjr-fj-xjr-tzr_W0QQitemZ370040233563QQihZ024QQcategoryZ36796QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

You can either buy them standard, with shorter stalks or flush like the ones I have and are literally plug and play.

Just specify which ones you're after when you pay. Quite a good price I thought aswell!
