Mrs. K wants comfy tourer, I want sports. Surely we can meet in the middle somewhere? What's the best compromise as far as a new bike goes? VFR? Thunderace? ZZR 1200?

Discuss... (and help me out), budget is about £3000.

Ta,

K.

K1 GSXR1000 + a comfier seat? Smile

For that money you could consider two bikes; probably get both an early R6/ZX6 G model and a thunderace/ZZR1100.

I've seen plenty of ok 99 R6s go for a bit over £1500. Suppose the prices will go up a bit as the weather gets nicer, but there's still bargains to be had if you have patience and shop around.

High mileage can be fine - think often if it's got past, say, 25k miles and second gear is ok, then it probably won't have the problem.
Not talking pristine and shiny, but perfectly usable, despite maybe a scratch or two, etc.

I do know someone who may still have a low milage Thunderace for sale, so considering that as an option at the moment. Problem is, I've still got the "Dead-Zed-R" to do something with.....

Stop messing about and go for the VFR.

It has been the best sports tourer since the days of the dinosaur for good reason. Even now the competition is just about catching up.

For new money (over your budget) I'd be looking at the Kawasaki GTR1400 but as I can't get a test ride on one I'll look elsewhere.

So 2nd hand VFR. Avoid if possible the V-TEC model unless it's already had the expensive service done. Ideal for getting somewhere in comfort and then having the option of taking off the hard panniers and being a little sporty.

Could drop stinkwheel a PM and ask his opinion on the bike as I believe he does hi miles.

I can't fault the VFR750 I have. I've heard mixed oppinions on some of the later ones.

In particular I heard my local motorcycle mechanic making a bet with his mate that he wouldn't be able to remove the fairing from his 3 year old 800 model without drilling out the screw heads.

It'll keep up with most things, has a comfy pillion but also comes with a genuine honda seat hump if you fancy single seating it.

The last of the 750s and the very first 800 were the last ones to be built with the emphasis firmly on build quality. My 750 cost me £2000 with 16k miles on it.

...And bizzarely....

Same problem as I had on my Divvy many moons ago. Frayed/corroded starter/ignition circuit feed. fixed with a little hacksawing, a spare length of ignition wire and two cable connectors....

Stinkwheel, if I could find one for that price and in that condition then I'd bite the owners arm off to have it...

They're a little more pricey at the moment it seems round here....

Oh well, off to check a few shops.

i did a postcode search on ebay for you for vfr750s

i found this one 30 miles from milton keynes

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VFR-750-FL-VFR750-not-VFR800-only-29000-miles_W0QQitemZ250236823613QQihZ015QQcategoryZ9806QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

looks good to me

i prefer to buy off the previous owner rather than a dealer as you can guess a bit about how the bike has been treated

oh and its cheaper.

I suggest you have a look on biketrader.co.uk then.

Don't be afraid to travel for the right bike. There's a non VTEC 800 with 15k miles on in a dealers in Wales for £1895 for example.

Too good to be true.....

Wiring fixed, drove a mile, big ol' ball of smoke from the exhaust and the car being looked at by the recovery guy for the 3rd time in one day.

Looks like no VFR for me..... Sad
