Is my clutch shafted?

My clutch cable snapped a couple of weeks agon and after finally getting the right replacement, There's no 'right' adjustment I can find.

Where I've got it now, gearchanges feel quite bitey and and notchy, as If it's not fully disengaging, and at the same time it slips accelerating onto dual carriageways.
I'm adjusting it by the nuts down at the clutch end, is there anything I should be doing to the lever to give it more travel - or do I actually need to be getting into the clutch itself.

2004 CG, just coming up on 30,000 miles.

Does the new CG still have the 'screw & locknut' adjuster for the clutch pushrod on the side-casing? If so you should adjust this before using the cable adjusters to set the free-play.

Without knowing the manufacturer's reccomended settings, I would remove the cable then loosen the locknut and centre screw, then wind-in the screw until you feel it contact the pushrod, then back it off about 3/4 of a turn. Now lock-off the locknut.

P.S. beware that on some bikes the adjuster must be turned 'backwards' (as if you are un-doing it) to wind it in.

My CG's clutch was knackerd at 30k so yours may be aswell, depending on how much you rag it! Quite an easy job to replace, leave about 3-4 hours and make sure you use new gaskets and clean out the oil spinner while you are at it.
