600 Ninja G1 Timing Chain

A very quick question for one of you very techies out there.
I have a 600 Ninja G1 which is making a bit of a rattling noise when dropping off revs, it sounds like the rattle is coming from the top of the engine on the O/S and it sounds a little chain like

Is the chain tensioner on the G1 self adjusting or does it need a poke?

Or does anyone know (based on my very dodgy description) another possible cause, from the hundreds of options availabe?
