What are your opinions on the abrasion resisitance/durability/safety of this material......it`s basically PVC,fake leather,PU,treated plastics (i think).....

Some of the google links are saying that modern synthetic leather is now 300% stronger and more durable than traditional animal leather but i dunno if that`s true.It might be good for bags and shoes etc but will it apply to a motorcycle jacket that`s skimming across the tarmac and 100mph or so???

If it`s only gonna be good for "1" crash i can deal with that.....but i really need to know if i can have the confidence in it to actually do the job atleast once??.

opinions please.....

I don't believe I've seen these synthetic leather jackets in bike shops, has anyone else seen them?

Confused

My opinion; if you want a leather jacket, get real leather.

Trust me....i`ve been looking for weeks for the same jacket in real leather but there aren`t any.
This one`s a foreign import jobby but it`s got all the armour in the right places etc and looks decent quality considering the price (£50).

I`ll be getting some 1 piece race leathers when i`ve got the cash but this is just to "make do" for now coz the price is good.
I`ve got textiles that i wear everyday .....but surely synthetic leather`s gotta be 1 step above textiles for abrasion resistance??

I'd stick with your tried and tested textiles.

For £50 I wouldn't expect it to be amazing. If synthetic leather is so great, why aren't they making race leathers out of it?

I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole.(Peter Kay)

Aren't those market stall cheapy red and black red bull jackets synthetic leather?

I wouldn't like to fall down when I'm walking in one of those let alone off a bike.

Done a little research and it appears motorbike clothing can include some synthetic leather stuff called Lorica
From this site wrote:

£50 does seem stupidly cheap for a well make protective piece of kit. IMO that sounds more like a fashion item rather than real bike gear. Also be aware of the stupid sizes bike gear comes in. I've tried imported (far eastern) kit sized at XXL that didn't even fit yet Hein Gericke same size was ok (was told clothing cut for the market, imported stuff is sized for their market so when over here it's wrong).

FWIW if you can't find a decent leather jacket for the price get a textile one. Makers like JTS have some good stuff (and usually good deals at shows). Otherwise Hein Gericke have some good textile jackets (that's what I've got!).

stupidly long eBay link

Shipping charges given only for America. Are you in the U.S.A.?
If you are no problem. If not then the seller might be funny.
Also beware of U.S. sizes as they're nothing like European ones.

I wouldn't buy them unless they are EU tested and certified and have all the labelling to show this. Buy anything without these and you run the risk of buying some shoddy clothing which will offer no protection.

There are CE tests regarding armour, but nothing regarding the leather's abrasion resistance, not that I know of at any rate.

IMHO you will sweat like a pig in a bin-liner wearing that. PVC does not breath well.

Right well i`ve taken a huge leap of faith and bought one.
Needed a bigger size than the one they were offerring for 50 notes so its cost me £65 inc shipping to UK with tracking.

It may well be sweaty but leathers are just the same aren`t they?and it`s always cold over here anywhere so i`m not gonna turn my nose up at gear that stays warm.
It`s windproof and waterproof with a detachable mesh lining and airflow cooling system etc etc so it shouldn`t be too bad.I`ll post an honest answer about it when it arrives and i`ve seen it and felt it in person.

If it`s cheap crap i`ll just use it as an extra cushion layer for under my textiles when i`m out for a cruise......and let it double up as a "fashion" item for meets....lol
Only thing i don`t like the look of is the cheapo armour in it but i`ve got some knox stuff to replace it with so that`s covered.

cheers for the feedback guys......watch this space.....lol

I honestly don't think it will have any protective qualities at all.

As someone said previously, there are no CE standards for leathers as they aren't considered protective clothing. As such, more unscrupulous manufacturers will make any old crap, add comfort foam 'armour' and sell it. Especially on the web.

Lorica is the stuff that Sidi Vertebra boots etc are made from, and I wouldn't trust it for abrasion resistance. Thats why modern motorcycle boots have acres of plastic covering them! (as well as for armour and crush protection).

I really don't think it will be anywhere near as protective as leather (and probably not as protective as cordura) and the only way to prove this (unfortunately) will come in the event of an accident.

But, for your sake I hope I'm wrong.

Ahh, right, I was got confused between the two things. Some companies do have some CE certification on items other than armour. Like Jofama for example.

CE test only relate to armour, nothing more. They can but the CE test thing onto the leathers/glove/boot, but it's only applying to the armour. Level 1 and Level 2. Level 2 means that the armours passes through less force to the body underneath.

They have the ECE test for helmets, but that's a legal thing.

Only usually the "uppers" though, because it's easier to dye and easier to clean.
