i know this is a silly topic to bring up with summer just around the corner, but has anyone ever had any experience with heated grips, can you actually feel the heat through thick bike gloves?

My heated grips are factory fitted and I really rate them, one of the best things about them is, because they are so good you don't need really thick gloves, so you have plenty of "feel". I don't have muffs, but I do have handguards and this keeps some of the wind chill off. Thumbs Up

get them. that's all there is to say.

i fitted 'roxter' ones to my bike (same as oxford really) and i use them quite often, i rode in extreme cold, wind and rain for 5 hours last month and had them on at first, after a while i decided that they werent helping, so i switched them off. i coudnt get them back on quick enough after a few minutes when i realised how much they did help. they may not always warm your hands up, but they certainly will stop them getting so cold. fit them, for the little cost you will get great gains.

Fit them you will love them. I have ridden through winter using Autumn/spring gloves which aren't that thick really, but I had warm hands Smile

Yep thats what I have got. Wire them straight to the battery as the manual says. Some people put relays in, except Oxford have advised against this as the heated grips might turn themselves off due to a lack of power.

Got them on both bikes.

They are good in normal winter conditons

However when below zero and above 50mph (ie your doing 60 and its - 2) you can't tell they are on.

I fitted them to to my 125, big bike has them too but I haven't tried them as yet.

I got a cheap set off ebay, had to make some after-market adjustments (cheap chinese cable had a break.)

Anyway my point was, I think to get full effects from them you need some sort of wind guards, knuckle protectors or what ever they're called. The palms of my hands were always toasty but they do nothing for my finger tips.

Thumbs Up

Probably the best bit of kit you can buy. GET THEM. I got some Roxter grips from the NEC for £30. Gonna get some more this year as a spare set as I think the connectors are corroding as I left them exposed.....

They really make a difference in most winter conditions. I did 470 miles over the weekend in Wales. Snow, hail and and icy wind - they held up and although my finger tips got cold, my hands were not painfully cold. They were on full blast for most of the day too.

They turn themselves off when the battery falls below 11.5v. The bike will still start as I tested that when I got them. I wired them direct to the battery as this gives them access to a supply of 13v+ when the engine is running to ensure effective operation of the heat.

You will never know the joy of gradualy having feeling come into your hands after a long ride if you fit them, avoid.

If they did some form of heated element that goes inside the clip on bar id be interested.
But I run Renthal Grips. Simply because they are super skinny.
And Ive never come across a set of heated grips as thin as renthals.

They're very good for motorway journeys but for around town they're no good, as you're often using the clutch and front brake so don't get heat on your finger tips (definately the bits that get the coldest).

Mine turn off all the bloody time anywhere under about 30mph but I'm not sure why (they're not wired through a relay).

I'm going to invest in heated gloves next winter... no more cold hands then. I spent practically £100 on heated grips and good thick gloves.... for £120/£130 I could have got the perfect solution - heated gloves!

Ben

They do a set of elements, that are extremely thin, they go on the bar and the grips (whatever you want) go over the top, heating your choice of grips. Few american places do them, not sure bout in the uk, but i bet it's possible.

Is your interest in old bikes motivated exclusively by masochism? Just curious...

I'm tempted to get some, are the wrap around ones good too or is it better to invest in the new grips completely?

I took mine off and fitted renthals instead! Shocked In the coldest winters, i STILL got cold and had no feeling in my hands, so back to thick gloves for that homely comfort. I ran oxford grips too. The cable got snagged and screwed the grip up!

I find if it's cold enough to warrant their use, I've already taken measures (Pathan lobster claw gloves, and HG neoprene overgloves) to negate their benefit.

They don't do anything for my fingertips or the backs of my hands; I imagine they would be MUCH better with muffs/guards fitted to reduce wind-chill without bulking up.

Have Oxford grips on my 1400 would not ride without them .Loads of heat and it has a thermostat so can turn heat up or down. Never had it past half way even running from Berwick to Livingston in freezing fog on the way back from Newcastle. Thumbs Up

Another vote for heated gloves here. I've had two pairs of oxford heated grips fail in 2 years. You need a pair of grotesque handlebar muffs in addition to heated grips if you plan to do regular long distance winter riding. Grips by themselves make it marginally bearable; not comfortable. As others have mentioned, your finger tips and thumb will still be frostbitten, and riding in traffic with your hands on the cold brake and clutch levers still remains a problem. Still, it's better than nothing.
