At my work (pizza hut) they only have two bike jackets, one a medium size and and extra large, both of which do not fit and the armour in the jackets cover the wrong parts such as my biceps and forearm instead of elbows and shoulers. Ive come off the scooters twice and ive been lucky not to damage anything so far.
Im thinking of getting some motocross armour, specifically something like this
https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=290218251693&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=019
should be able to fit under the jackets fairly well as my alpinestar leather jacket fits.
does armour like this provide a lot of protection for road use as well as off road use?
also thinking of doing the same for my legs as the knee pads cover my shins
getting a lot of money for holiday pay so not really fussed bout the price of that armour (it would also work out quite well for a possible halloween costume) ____________________ Current Bikes RVF400 - 94

I woud demand they get decent kit, Apparantly you are not covered by there insurance if you dont wear there kit, this is the reason I didn't wanna do it. ____________________ Well, you know what they say. If you want to save the world, you have to push a few old ladies down the stairs.

I used to deliver pizzas for pizza hut in a doegey area of NW London, The gear is horrible isnt it, In the shop i worked in, there was about 6 jackets and trousers that were shared by all the riders, sweaty bastards that they were
I already owned a set of dainese body armor similar to the one you linked, and i used to wear that under my leather jacket, more as protection from fights and attempted muggings than from a 30mph crash on one of the peds (never did manage to crash one of the SH50's as hard as i did try)
The manager in the shop was not very keen on it because i looked like a biker rather than a pizza hut employee, however what it did accomplish was partially remove the MASSIVE target you have on your back wearing their gear... must be psychological, Black leather = dont trouble, Oversize pizza hut textiles = attempt to mug rob and abuse.
In the end i left because i wasent happy that i was not able to wear my own gear, and the job was horrible and under-paid.
Oh and the insurance issue is void so long as your kit proves the same or greater protection (which it would do if theirs does not fit).
I know its not what you asked in your question but my advice would be quit the shitty pizza hut job, save the money you would have spent on armor and take up dispatch riding, the pay isnt great either but you have more personal freedom and the scope to ride bigger bikes, plus it can be a challenge at times, when i was delivering pizzas it was boring as hell, once you memorized the area the route-planning and riding was complete auto pilot, the only thing i had to watch out for was getting jumped.
Continuing on that tangeant i can honestly say i was held up by no less than 40 12-16 year olds. I went down a cul-de-sac estate type place to deliver and they all materialized out of nowhere, now maybe 5 or 6 of them you could beat up or intimidate, but it was like wasps with that many. Quite an awe-inspiring glimpse into the yoof of today. I just gave them the pizzas and pretty much mowed through the crowd in an attempt to get the fuck out of there...
Bad bad job you have my sympathies
Edit: Glasgow... Ohh you poor bastard those neds must be a nightmare... I cant see why your manager would have issue with you wearing anything under the jacket, for that matter why would he even have to know? Oh and i never used their helmets, better off putting a packet of hoola hoops on your head....

ive talk to the manager about it several times, also the fact that the jackets are not water proof causes problems due to the fact it rains everyday in Glasgow.
apparently he orderd in some new gear.... in december, iv'e given up asking him to do something so im gonna do it myself and take out the crappily placed armour in the jackets and trousers and use my own gear underneath them, he complains i'l tell him to sod off. im still wearin the jackets and trousers, just that i have added protection underneath.
same thing with helmet, you really dont want to see what pizza hut helmet are like, ive seen staff drop them down from shlefs near the ceiling and simply put them back up
also i ddnt really crash the sh50's here, once was going over black ice on an unlit street and as you would know the sh50's lights is about as effective as a candle so only spotted it at the last second.
I wouldnt mind dispatch riding but im only 20 and on a restricted liscence so doubt i could get a job in that line of work, sounds more fun than delivering pizza's. Luckily the area i deliver to isnt too bad, although i did have a road rash moment with wee neds cycling alongside me and tryin to knock me over.
wearing a big red pizza hut jacket and riding a red scooter causes so much hassle
sadly they are soon replacing the honda sh50's with peugeots ludix's as they are cheaper to fix and replace ____________________ Current Bikes RVF400 - 94

Yep they had both SH50's and Ludix's, from what i can remember the SH50's were better as i think someone had de-restricted them ,
I guess the job totally depends on the area, mine was absolutely dreadfull and perhaps tainted my view of the job...
As to the dispatching, Courier insurance is dear enough, you would realistically need to be at least 21, and i dont suppose there are too many dispatch firms up in glasgow.
I guess if you are happy with the job keep doing it, Definately wear or buy your own helmet (i think you can request a new one from pizza hut and then just take it home with you and dont let anyone touch it). Get the armor and wear it under the jacket, dont ask the manager just do it, if he ever notices say how it increses your safety (not that they care about such things)...
Oh and buy some cheap gloves with armored knuckles, they come in handy for the enevitable punch-ups, but dont spend too much on them as they get kackered in a month or two...
Dont know what else to say really, i would advise you to just go and work in tesco for about the same money with less hassel but thats not what i wanted to do so it would be hypocritical of me to say you should... Goodluck with it |
