I found this in our local rag a few months ago, and completely forgot to post it up on here!

Its an article saying that websites and forums such as our own fair community here, are responsible for luring us onto dangerous roads!

What utter bollox.

Why do they have to put killed or seriously injured, why not say how many were killed and how many seriously injured?

I heard the roads in Tibet are top quality.

It is a common trick by the anti car and anti bike lobbies to make things appear more dangerous. A broken bone makes it a serious injury, as does a stay in hospital over night (so that would likely cover suspected concussion), hence instantly massively increased figures.

All the best

Wotcha.

Hmm - I notice the one chap who is moaning about the websites lost his son in a bike accident. Now who's fault would you say that accident was . . . .

Mr Storer, whose son died when a lorry pulled out in front of him, added: "There are so many young people getting killed or injured on the roads and their families feel the pain and sadness for the rest of their lives."

Maybe he should direct his attention to better training for lorry drivers.

Sorry. Biking can be dangerous. People do get killed. You can't abolish death.

The way serious injuries are classified is a bit vague - basically it's any injury that requires hospital treatment. So sprained ankle counts as a serious injury.

There's also the standard comment in local (and national) newpapers about "high powered" motorcycles - the most memorable one I've seen was referring to a Honda C90... Rolling Eyes

oh n0z!

Biking is dangerous. Well, I never.

If a lorry pulls out in front of you, it doesn't matter if you're Casey Stoner riding the 2008 Desmo GP bike or a chav on a 50cc ped, you're going to get stacked. That's life I'm afraid.

I expect most of the injuries happen to those reckless members of the sunny day brigade. Around Matlock and Buxton the roads are teeming with them in summer.

That is absolute bullshit.
I know for a fact that reading this website has made me safer. I know common accidents to watch out for (like when filtering, look out for cars coming out of side roads - saved me a crash the other day when before I mightn't have thought about it)
Ironically you learn skills that help you avoid crashing into the side of a lorry if you don't know what to look out for.

These message boards are a wealth of knowledge, where more experienced riders can pass on their knowledge to those of us who are yet to make the mistakes they have.

Being told about the decent roads is just a side effect.

As I remember from the local rag, the vast proprotion of people hurt in derbyshire were in the 16-21 age group. ( the website isnt showing the full article)

That age bracket to me screams people on peds, most of which I doubt would be hooning around the best roads let alone reading up on the subject on the net

It isn't vague. It is quite well regulated. Unless they admitted you for treatment as an in patient a sprained ankle would not be counted as a serious injury.

This one makes me laugh:

while i agree with most of the comments above, i also have to mention the fact that when motorcyclists do filter on the inside lane to beat traffic jams it is extremelly annoyin because not of only the fact u ave got watch the car in front we have got to watch to see if a motorbike is in your blind spot. a lot of accidents could be stopped if this kind of driving was banned.

Assuming she means inside as in, to the left of her when she's in lane 2+ on a dual carriageway/motorway then she wants to ban people because she's too lazy to do a blindspot check to change lanes, which you are supposed to do?

'Lured to their death'?

I always thought the Sirens were just Greek mythological creatures, turns out they are real, and alive and well and using the internet.

Maybe he DID mention training for lorry drivers, Remember... What he said has been mediated by the press, SO we're only getting half a story...

I loved the other related article - https://www.thisisderbyshire.co.uk/displayNode.jsp?nodeId=124621&command=displayContent&sourceNode=124615&contentPK=19738171

"They need to drive safely because it's the judgement of the European Court that people must put the safety of other road users first."

A Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents' spokesman said: "People shouldn't follow the advice on these websites." Laughing

Success is desperately needed as 11 bikers were killed and another 137 seriously injured on Derbyshire's roads between January and October last year.
I wonder what the suicide rates for derbyshire are?
From google I find "Between 2002 and 2004 there were 183 suicides in Derbyshire residents" but no-ones calling for the sites promoting suicide to be pulled?

Its another case of the media giving a mouthpiece for grieving people who want to be able to blame the death of their loved one on *something*.

It doesn't matter what as long as it eases their pain.

You see them all campaigning against the iraq war because young johnny has been killed out there, but I can guarantee they were probably all for it before that happened. Same with stuff like air weapons. Their kid gets injured or killed by an air gun and they want them all banned. Doesn't matter that the psychopathic bastard that used the airgun is still at large. Its sad really, you can tell they are hurting, and they think campaining against the easiest thing to blame will help. But you know it won't. They'll still be left with the grief, and the newsies just lap it up.

The media doesn't help by sensationalising everything to sell papers/get people to watch. It means that soon people won't be allowed to do *anything* except earn and spend money. We won't even be allowed to go out in case we die in a horrific going out induced case of pneumonia.
