Right i've finally found Maurices very simple retard friendly speedo fixer thingy so I can finally 'review' my downgearing.

Boring old man CBR 600 FT (1996) which used to wheezily go from 150-160 with my face on the tank and fully pinned on a good day.
Wheelied in second happily enough with clutch and quite pokey (95rwhp) so happy enough, but i always wanted something abit snarlier and eager to wheely.

Well with some very kind help from Drew (Vincent off the forum) we chucked on the new C+S (-1+2) which was quite a conservative change.
Unfortunately i chose mid-winter with completely shagged BT-020's to ride back on, so simply wheelspan whenever i opened her up in /any/ gear on the way back. Then she got moth balled while i went back to uni.

Anyway, i came back and slung my race scrub Pirelli supercorsa on the rear and set about on my exodus down to Hetz's. Admittedly the second half was cack weather so couldn't really thump it, but jesus the bit in good weather Thumbs UpMr. Green

Every traffic light was like pulling away with a fat bird on the back Laughing Trying to move off quickly whilst keeping the front pegged was abit tricky, but whilst i found on motorways I was constantly reaching for the 7th gear the fuel economy wasn't that horrifically affected. But bloody hell were 6th gear roll-ons improved, I spent the whole motorway time in 6th and whenever a gap opened I just gave it a squirt and the speedo was reading silly.

Which brings me to my last point. On a couple of empty stretches out of boredom i pinned it and happily smacked an indicated 180-185mph, which made me certain the bugger was overreading something stupid.

Maurice's gearing indicator has just shown however that 160mph standard should be 179.4 with the new gearing... So i've infact gained top end since it can top out in 6th now Thumbs UpMr. GreenKarma Oh, and it stomps up to it now Very Happy

So for all those in two minds, i strongly suggest doing it when you next need a C+S. Im ecstatic with the results, and i can't wait to wind up my mate on his ZX9-R who's a straightline crusader by not being left quite so far behind him.

My VFR400 was over-geared as standard too, no chance of red lining in 6th. I only went up 2 teeth on the back as I use it for long distance but it still gave the bike more acceleration and top end.

On the red line in 6th I GPS-clocked it at an easy 136mph, more than Honda claimed it would do brand new fifteen years ago. Just have to be careful not to plough it through the red.

BTW no-ones gonna know how to use that gearing.exe thing Laughing. It doesn't make a lot of sense by itself and the better one that did make sense got lost. Rolling Eyes

How the hell can people not tell how to use it? Old sprocket sizes on left, new on the right, and you just match the speeds to see what your speedo will now say for the actual speed (still subject to normal speedo overreading)

Big thanks to Kickstart for helping use his Thrust generator... Not quite certain of how to interpret the units, parse, but me thinks its mainly how much it will pull.

Either way, look at the difference its made, 6th is now 5th Thumbs Up Black dotted line denotes wind resistence, but thats only mildly dialled down from an unfaired bandit so its abit pessimistic. Also im in two minds as to whether the top speed is correct. But gives you an idea of how much more lairy it is in the lower gears, and how much more responsive the top ones are Mr. Green

i have a zx6r. and i have no idea about all this gearing lark yet, being new to it all really. anyone reckon i should change one or both sprockets on this bike? and if i did, would it be possible to have the speedo changed so it still read correct?

Hi

You can get a speedo healer to get the speedo to read accuratly again (or indeed to get the speedo to read accuratly in the first place).

As you can see with the graph Bonny has, he could have much the same effect if he chose to cruise in 5th gear rather than 6th.

If you can dig out the gearing for your bike (almost certainly given in the owners handbook) and a dyno graph for your bike then I will lob the details in so you can have a play with the effects of gearing on the thrust at the back wheel (which basically means how much acceleration you have).

All the best

Keith

Good timing, I was just getting round to the point of changing my chain and sprockets seeing as they are becoming a bit fooked. I've been wondering about downgearing too but the speedo thing puts me off a bit.

How would you correct a digital speedo such as on my bike?

Hi

The speedo healer plays around with the pulses from the sender unit to the speedo. Should work for pretty much any electronics speedo including digital ones.

All the best

im feeling a bit smug, as on my sports bike, the speedo drive comes off the front wheel so no need to adjust, and it was already downgeared when i got it

Was the chain ok? Did you have to take it off and does it fit the new sprockets?

I'm thinking of going -1 +3 in a couple of weeks jewbag Cool

It is great, but takes some getting used to. Admittedly i've not had a decent hoon in a good few months (6-9 sadly) so that may explain it, plus the bike was being abit funny. But i found it an absolute bastard being in the right gear at the right time. I was always a gear too high, so it was kind of like riding a race 2-stroke. I'll get back in the vibe, just need to sort out the shit with my bike first.

Anyone know any good simple ways to get your rear wheel straight without straight planks or string/5 assistants? My blocks are well off, and wheelies that violently pull to the right (into traffic) are not fun Evil or Very Mad

put it on a paddock stand, loosen the nut for the back wheel,

im assuming that like my bike you also have screw adjusters for altering how far back the wheel goes

turn the nut all the way back, and then count how many turns it takes to get it to the require chain slackness, and do the same with the other side, but only turn the nut the number of turns that you did the first one

so as long as your frame and swing arm are straight, everything will be in line

When you swapped the G&S did you also fit a 2nd engine?
96hp is NOT going to get you anywhere near 180mph.... especially not that model which is known to be somewhat faster WITHOUT the fairing....

i was with you until you said it would be faster without the fairing

sounds a bit unlikely, but im not about to set up a test to prove you wrong

Entirely possible. Bikes are lousy at drag anyway, and the worst cause of it is the back of the bike. If you can reduce the frontal area without making much difference to the shape as far as drag goes then you are on to a winner.

All the best

Seriously have people on here suddenly gained a third chromosome 21 or what.

For the hard of thinking...

180mph ish ON THE CUNTING SPEEDO

Also colin i'm aware how to adjust chains Wink But im lacking a paddock stand up here, which means i cant really get away with adjuster blocks fully in. Might have to try and get a decent ruler/set of calipers and measure from the end of the bolts.

Yes and no, its about smooth flow surely. Smoother flow over the front means less vortices at the rear so less net drag?
Plus fully nakeds have no screen etc to tuck behind, but i suppose its whether the drag saving counters the extra weight.

Put simply the most aerodynamic shape (and also hydrodynamic as its all fluid flow) is a tear drop with the large end at the front, with a length to width ratio of 0.25 (seen in every fast/efficiently swimming animal, whale/tuna/shark etc)
The tear drop smooths the flow at the rear leaving less of an imprint, but i cant remember the logic for the slightly bulbous front.

I can see how a bikini fairing may be sufficient, but not a wholly naked one.

There's no need for you to test it, it's already been proven with at least 2 magazine road tests. It was 6mph faster without the fairing....

& I'd prefer it if you really didn't *test it* as the last guy I mentioned it to wadded his into a ball about 2 miles down the road... Rolling Eyes

-1 on the 1000, it was nice to play with but I don't like it, preferred stock.

It makes it accelerate a little bit quicker, but not enough to be that noticeable.

Hoists the front a bit easier on the power, but its all about the clutch.

Going back to stock when I fit the new clutch.

Then the stunt bike comes, with a nice big rear Mr. Green

If your 600F's adjusters are like my hornet's (I think they are) simply measure the amount of thread sticking out the back on each side. That's as accurate as you're going to get it. Wink

The rear is so bad that the front has little effect.

bonny_ricardo wrote:

Weight has virtually no effect on top speed.

Very true, but it is the back bit that is important. Flatten the front and it would not be that much worse.

All the best

Actually it does, but not in the way most people think....
LSR vehicles are built heavy to stop wheelspin & keep the vehicle on the ground. Mate of mines old LSR Z1 would spin up the rear wheel above 175mph.. & that was with 70lb of lead bolted to the swingarm..

Hey Bonny, I need new C&S for the CB, and since I dont tend to go above the ton for any extended period downgearing seems sensible. Any recomendations for places/makes?

wemoto only do -1/+2 and I'm not convinced with the quality of their pattern parts, renthals website says they can do -1/+5 which would be fun. Is it silly to be concerned about the toughness of renthals alloy sprockets as opposed to steel ones, since the CB is known for eating front sprockets. Need to find somewhere selling renthal sprockets too.

So yeah, any recomendations for makes or places to buy em would be welcome.
