Can anyone tell me how to rectify this problem? The bike has been in a crash and the fork stanchions were bent. Just wandering really whether the yokes are aswell, and if so would it just be the bottom one (as that's the one with the steering tube)?

Cheers for any help.

loosen both top and bottom yoke clamp nuts (bike will need to be supported) then twist the bars while holding the front wheel, just like what you used to do with your old bmx when you were a kid Very Happy
easy as pie,
when straight, tighten everything back up Very Happy

if they are bent you need new yokes, when youve got straight forks, if they dont fit, you need a new bottom yoke.

Well the stanchions are brand new so there's no question of trueness there. They did have to be teased in to the yokes. The first stanchion went in smoothly but the second needed a slight bit of pressure on the top yoke to align with the hole. Is this normal?

There are no bars for the bike yet, could this be done by just turning the top yoke? Should the big nut on top of the top yoke be undone aswell? Should the top yoke turn and stay where it's put or will it try and spring back until everything's tightened?

you can do it just by pulling on a fork leg, or hitting the top yoke with a rubber mallet, the top nut doesnt need to be loosened,
all that has happened is the top yoke is not inline with he bottom yoke, nothing major at all,

I thought so. What would happen when trying this if the yokes are shot? Also what makes you think they aren't? or it just worth trying first?

Thanks muchly for the help.

Only just got round to trying this out today.

I need some more help if someone is willing?

Basically did what hmmmnz said - slackened all yokes bolts off and tried to twist the yokes with the wheel between my mate's knees. It worked so far until when tightened back up you can twist the yokes so that they're back to how they were.

To me this doesn't make sense at all. Why should I be able to straighten the yokes out when all the clamps are done up tight? Shouldn't the forks be solid and only move up and down (compress)?

When the yoke bolts are all done up tight, if you grab and fork bottoms or stanchions anyway you can twist them so the yokes aren't in line with the front wheel - if this makes sense.

Cheers everyone.

that sounds ;like your forks are the culprit.
pull each one out and check to see its straight.

Don't ignore the top yoke, when I crashed I managed to bend that while leaving the bottom just fine. You need to check absolutely everything for straightness.

Both yokes seem fine but then I've got an untrained eye.

Spindle is straight.

Any ideas of how to check the top yoke other than a visual check?

Cheers

Turns out the bottom yoke was bent, ordered a set of yokes off ebay and swapped the bottom one which cured it, so going to sell the top one back on ebay.

Just thought I'd conclude the thread.
