Notice from your siggy that you have a hornet cup race bike, currently building a 98 600 hornet into a track day bike and was after a bit of advice.

Current mods either fitted or on order are:

K&N road filter (apparently they dont make a race filter for the 98 bike)
hyperpro replacement progressive spring kit
dynojet kit, will get some dyno time booked in to get it tuned properly at some point in the future

currently struggling with what rearsets to get and also what tyres to put on. as the bikes got a 16" front wheel choices seem to be very limited. what do you use?

any other mods you can think of would be much appreciated!

You can change the front to a 17.

Dunno about rearsets. Have you tried asking in the nest?

The front sprocket is 15 tooth, ordered a 14 which should be here in a couple of days.

You can change the front wheel to a 17, just get a 17 inch hornet front and 17 inch disks, then it goes straight in.

For rearsets, I have hornet cup rearsets(£110) on mine, that's what it came with. Valter Moto(£149) ones are also very good. Gilles are awesome if you want to be tarty, but are a bit expensive and don't crash well.(£299!!)

I wouldn't bother with progressive springs. They aren't very well suited to track use IMO. They get harder the further down the travel you go, so dive loads to start with then stiffen right up. They are good for the road, but stick with linear for the track.

The best thing I can suggest is that you get down to BSD in peterboro and get them to re-valve your forks. That's why most of the hornet cup boys do, it's a very good mod. I have BSD forks on mine.

As you're using it on track you'll probably want to change the shock too, it's ok, but overheats quite quickly, as yours is a 98 chances are it'll be shot anyway. I have a technoflex unit on mine, but again that's just what it came with.

If you do the 17 inch front wheel mod you can choose from pretty much any track based rubber. I use BT002's but that's because it's the hornet cup control tyre and I plan to enter it next year so I may as well get used to them.

I personally run a stock filter, you don't get mega gains with a filter anyway. The jetting will probably be fine as it is. Someone from another forum runs a cut down akra on standard jetting with no problems.

If you're not planning on going racing with it the best way to get more power is to get hold of a CBR600F V-W head and carbs and put those on. Get the head skimmed slightly. You'll then get around 90-95 and it still be easy to ride, probably more if you seriously upped the compression.

Hornet cup rearsets are good. had a set on my bike for a while. Look in the racing section of the nest, a guy on there sells all the bits needed.

17inch wheels are expencive. Ask on the nest as a couple of the racers still used 16's last time I was on there.
Should still be enough tyre choice for a 16 unless your up the top of the hornet cup feild.
FTI I did a couple of trackdays on y daytona 675 using 010's running mid pack of inters with no grip problems. You dont need race tyres for trackdays!

I was running rings around novices on Pilot Sports on a 16 inch front. You can get Pirelli Diablos in 16 too. Wink

16" Diablos on the track are fine for trackdays, although you can't (well, I couldn't find any) get any race wets for the 16" front.
