at the moment i live with my family in a fairly nice area in glasgow, have a garage for my bike (rvf) but 3 of my friends are now moving out their flat and trying to get a 4 bedroom flat and have offered me the 4th room.

iv'e been wantin to move out for quite a while but with the bike now im a bit worried, first being insurance, i can imagine the insurance will go up quite a bit as i'l be moving to a flat in the west end of glasgow and the bike will now be left at the side of the road instead of a big concrete garage in a quiet area.

other problems i can think of is security as i dont want it knicked or vandalised and just general maintenance on the bike and washing it.

obviously there must be lots of people here living in flats with bikes and was wondering if i should stay at home or move out? or at least suggestions or solutions to problems i might face.

Getting your own place is the best thing ever.....but sharing with mates is a bad idea IME.
If you can`t afford your "own" place just yet....stay with mommy till you can.

No one can tell you how much your insurance will increase by, just give your insurance company a call and ask them what difference it will make in your premium.

But getting out of your parents place is the goal. I moved out of "home" 4 years ago now and would never consider going back!

not wanting an exact ammount of an increase but will it go to something rediculous like £500 extra?, i could probobly afford it and would actually be more fun going to work as its more than 2 miles away from where i live.

Checked it out on google maps and it seems like a decent area(as much as you can tell from a satalite picture) trees, gardens, greenhouses etc and picnic benches so cant be that bad, its also on a dead end street so random drunks shouldnt be wandering past. I'l give the insurance company a phone in the morning and see what they say.

Onto other matters, at the moment i only have a £30 bike chain i bought when i got the bike, should i invest in more security? Iv'e seen ads on ebay for bike alarms and other security stuff, should i go cheap and get stuff off ebay or pay a lot of top of the line security gadgets.

I wouldn't have thought it would be that much more, a few hundred at the very most but like I said before you wont know unless you speak to your insurance company. Probably best to check before you make any decisions as well as you dont wana make the decision move out and find yourself with a large insurance bumo that you werent expecting!

Why not just keep your bike garaged at your parent's place if it's not too far away?

Excuse me?

Moving out and living with mates is the best thing ever. You get just as much independance as you would living on your own and you will have an AMAZING time in the process. Go for it Thumbs Up

well its 11 miles away going through the city centre which takes about an hour with public transport and only around 20 mins on the bike.
