My local post office wouldn't take an internet print out...

Doesn't the online taxing place let you ride your bike around before they post it you?

Tax it online. it is registered as taxed on the system. The thing is that occasionally the insurance will take a while to show on the system, and coupled with the v5 being registered elsewhere it may be a shenanigan to get your tax disc posted to you rather than the previous owner!

if the tax disc does end up posted to the previous owner, im guessing that will be the bloke im buying it off, i could just get him to send me it, either that or just buy another 12 months tax when ins docs come through. its only 15 pound after all.

Does the previous owner have insurance on the bike? If so, why not get him/her to tax it for you? Just add the £15 to the sale price.

£15 quid in the bank is £15 in the tank, thats a good tank of fuel in a sports bike there, do that then and ask the previous owner to send it yourway. Or try paying over the phone. Might be easier talking to someone and getting them to note the change of keeper to save the hassle..

Well how are the PO to know its you thats printed it.....Tell them thats what was sent to you. Or go to another PO. Bigger and busy one's are best.

Along with the new owner bit of the V5 and MOT is all you need.

You may find that you trying to tax online will fail as your card details won't match the reg keeper. Something to do with preventing fraud Thumbs Up

My mate got insured with MCE yesterday, they told him that they can't email him anything and there's nothing he can print off. He just has to wait for the docs.

I did the same as you. The bike had MOT but no tax. Here is what I did.

1. I insured the bike under my name.
2. I taxed my bike online (had to wait a day or 2 after I insured the bike)
3. I printed out the confirmation of road tax paid and kept this on me at all times.
4. I picked the bike up, paid the money and got the V5 new keeper supplement.

I now had all the documents on me whilst riding it (the only thing being the tax disc that was showing was out of date) and simply picked the new tax disc up from the guy I bought it off when it arrived.

Granted I never got pulled over but I think I was well covered Thumbs Up

The fine you get is failure to display, it's not a fine for not having road tax. I would seriously suggest NOT doing what this guy did.

Mr. Green

My reasoning was that there was NO WAY I was able to display the tax disc BUT the bike has tax. Therefore it would be argued I was paying tax for nothing as I wouldn't be able to ride which seems like a flaw in the system

I've got a monthly policy with ebike at the moment and have done that a couple of times when tax has been due on the bikes.

As long as you print it out using the highest quality setting on your printer driver and some good inkjet paper, or if you've got access to a lazer printer then print it out on that (it'll be indistinguishable from the one they post to you in that case) then you should be OK.

They provide an acrobat PDF document of your policy online which you can view and print with Acrobat Reader (available for free from adobe.com) and it'll print exactly the same as the document they send you through the post.

If you don't want to go with ebike for the full year, you could always get a monthly policy for a month, then this would allow you to get your bike taxed and insured quickly so you can get out on it, and give you a bit more time to shop around for the best deal (just don't do what I did and then never get around to doing that leaving the monthly policy running for ever even though it's costing you more money Very Happy).

What's the fine for not displaying a tax disc?

To be honest I'd just tax it online and chance it. You may be able to blag your way out of it in the unlikely event you do get pulled over, by saying it must've got nicked, or you've taxed it and it hasn't arrived so you physically couldn't display it.

If the worst comes to the worst and you crash and everything gets checked, you'll be taxed and the only thing wrong will be the failure to display.

That is all provided you can tax it online, and it's just an issue of not having the actual tax disc or not.

P.S. If you do use ebike to take out a monthly policy, then it may not show up on the insurance database that the online tax people use, so you'll probably need to go to the post office with the documents. You shouldn't have any problem doing that (as long as you don't mention it's a printout) and if you do, try another post office.

I've done it a couple of times though and they just gave me the tax disk without batting an eyelid.

It may take a few days for it to show up on the insurance database before he's able to tax it online, so that might not be possible.

I'm not sure, but if there's any lag between the database the dvla use and the one the police systems use, then he could perhaps be more likely to be pulled in the period when he's waiting for documents to arrive and have his tax disk checked (not sure about that though).

Ofcourse the other thing is that I wouldn't really be keen to trust some of the monkeys working at the insurance companies to be insuring it over the phone myself. First time I took out insurance they'd got more wrong about me than they got right when the documents came through, despite me running through it all on the phone twice with them to check the details were correct (about the only thing they got right was my name and date of birth).

At least with ebike it's all automated and quick, and you can be sure to check all the details yourself to know they're correct right away, and print a certificate off the same day.

It's the law, it dosn't need to be reasonable or make sense.

Don't forget playing music with a repetative beat in public has been illegal since 1994

Get the insurance docs printed and tax it at the post office. You'll be loads better off.

I'm probably sounding like a salesman for ebike here (I'm not and they're more expensive for me as well) but have a look at their monthly policy. You can take out a single months cover and that'll give you the option of not continuing at the end of the month, giving you a bit of time to shop around for the best deal on a yearly policy somewhere else.
