What do you reckon? After today, I am convinced it's lunctime!

I was commuting on the bike today and I had to go out & do some errands at 12.30.

Bleeding hell, never had as many near misses in one short journey! Shocked

Had a white van pull out from in front of a parked milk float just as I got to him (locked the back wheel with that one but thankfully stayed on), at least 4 "creepers" out of junctions try to pull out as I approached, a couple of suicidal cyclists running red lights right across my path and more pedestrians than I could count throwing themselves under my wheels.

Is it cos everyone has limited time and has to dash about that they are so careless do you think? I'm off to the bank at 4pm tomorrow......... Laughing

Rush-hour... without a doubt.

Everyone is pissed off, tired and trying to get home to get a leg over.

The traffic jams actually help in some ways, stop them moving at speeds at least!

drivers just blatently disregarding anyone,
parking in the road.
children running over the road.
and little kids telling me to wheelie when the traffic starts moving.

I find any time of the day outside of rush hour particularly bad especially during the holidays. If I'm "stupid" enough to be on the M5 after 0900 it's a nightmare, shoppers, oaps, and general muppets who have no idea of how to drive on motorways or in heavy traffic, and clearly aren't expecting a bike to be filtering. Gimme rush hour any day at least the regulars know how to behave. Wink

mmmm...

think we should consider the possibility that you are one of the said 'idiots' owing to the number of near misses you had.

and if this is the case then we should also consider that perhaps 4pm today, somewhere near your bank will be the worst time/place for idiots? Wink

Or then again maybe you were unlucky.

I'm definitely still learning - but i've done several thousand miles, much in central london so I've already got the idea that people can be suicidal. Even more reason not to be close enough to something that if it emergency stops, you end up locking your brakes.

Anyway - post was supposed to be tongue in cheek - not really getting at anyone, just stirring to liven up the morning.

Wink

I would definately agree with the poster up there ^^ about Friday nights, especially up town. Jeez, the amount of carnage people create with the rush to get home for the weekend! Shocked

Although I do believe some random days are worse than others, like Tuesday of this week. Absolutely mental, people had the right hump with each other, people definately in a crazier mood than the rest of this week.

As for lunchtimes, can't really comment. I'm too busy running across roads without looking... Mr. Green

5:30AM

I'm not kidding

until last week when I got my CV sorted I was a paper boy and had to ride 8 miles back to do my paper round.

Even though there are barely any cars on the roads the srivers are still dopey as f*ck.

+1 for Friday nights. Ever since I first started being on the road I've been aware of a increased sense of danger from the highly strung Friday drivers. Although this effect is definitely more pronounced around big cities!

If I'm honest I'm not as aware of it when I'm on my bike as I tend to get out of situations more quickly (filtering etc). If you're in a car you tend to notice it a lot more while your sat in a que of traffic.

Um, can you read? Razz The van didn't stop.......... there was a milk float parked half-on-half-off the pavement just feet after a traffic light juncton. The van was parked in front of him, also on the pavement. He pulled out onto the road without a backwards glance just as I was going past the milk float. If he'd gone straight forward from where he was parked I'd have gone around him anyway because of my road position at the time, he didn't, he came out at an angle right across the carriageway. I'll do you a paint!

https://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a229/Yambabe/idiot.jpg

I would consider myself an idiot if I'd hit him but I didn't, I just braked (hard enough to feel the back wheel lock fo a second but not actually stopping) and carried on my way......... Smile

It just seemed that at lunchtime people were so bothered to get where they needed to be (maybe because of limited time?) they were trying to barge stuff out of the way and ignore even the most basic road rules.

Yep - just having a bit of fun, trying to stir things up in the morning. You get my overall point though - whenever we have a period where it 'seems' as though everyone is conspiring to kill us, it is worth trying to take a step back and see if there is anything in our riding that may be contributing (i.e. lot on my mind and not concentrating as normal, just been watching motoGP and subconsiously think I am Lorenzo)

For what it is worth - my worst time for riding is heading into London shortly before 7am as all the car drivers are trying to get to their car parks (or out of the centre) before congegstion charge kicks in. The things they do to save £8!!!
