Hi guys,
I passed my CBT in November and for crimbo my folks bought me a brand new TZR 50 (im only 16) and today my dad took the exhaust off and took the restricter out of the down pipe. Anyway the bike flys in 1st, 2nd and 3rd but when I get into 4th the bike starts to die and loses power. Do you think that this is due to the jetting of the carb? also if this is the problem anybody have any ideas as of a site where I may get hold of jets??
Thanks for your help.
Mat

I got told from a Yamaha dealer that the new TZR50 is crap derestricted compared to other bikes similar. The only way you'll get it going 'fast' is with either a bore kit or someone who can tune your bike properly.

When your bike was totally standard did it get very far above 30mph?
I don't know If there's sports exhausts been made for it yet but get one of them and that should put you up a few mph more.

From experience I don't see the point in doing loads to a 50. It's not like your going to tune it to beat anything bigger. (Apart from slow 125's maybe)

Good luck with it anyway.

Id say you will have to check with yamaha uk, to determine if it will require carb re-jetting as im fairly sure it will. Also most u.k. spec 50cc bikes are down geared so that they dont go much over 30mph anyway. i remember reading a test of 50cc's in MCN, and they said that the TZR was slow, but because they had not been fully able to de-restrict it at the time of the test, and that it would require further investigation or new parts as well. It would be fair to say that there are more than 1 restrictor in the pipe, and so you might have to wait until a perf pipe becomes available.

Hi

Yes the TZR was not the fastest 50 in that MCN test, but the difference was not huge (in the region of 10% slower).

What top speed does it hit now? If it is still doing around 30mph, but getting there a lot quicker than I would suspect that it has some kind of speed limiter built in to the ignition unit (not unusual on 50's). It might just be a case of taking it to a dealer and having them plug it into the diagnostic unit to disable the top speed restriction (Peugeot 50's are done like this).

All the best

Keith

i thought the TZR was only hitting 38mph, but the fiesty little motohispana/Reiju 50's were doing 57-58mph, quite a difference. I thought they mentioned that there was alot of restrictions in the exhuast, and possibly the gearing and jetting needed altering. Either way the same motor in other 50's can reach 55mph so theres something holding it back. Having said that the TZR 50 is kin huge for a 50cc, it makes the old TZR125L look tiny!

Hi

I thought it managed about 50mph (give or take 1~2mph) while the others were managing just under 60.

All the best

It was definitely only managing somewhere in the 30's. They said it was due to the restrictions in it not being fully done, but it's handling & braking were well up there with the rest, if not better, so MCN said that if it was fully de-restricted then it should be on par if not better than the others. Ofcourse, I know everything MCN say isn't gospel, and they should have got the thing de-restricted properly in the first place, but it is around 30-40kg's heavier than the Aprilia Rs50 for example (low 80's compared to mid 110kg's dry weight I think?!?) so obviously losing out there already.

All the other were managing mid 50-60mph run's, which should be expected as I they all had the Minarelli AM6 engine in it (Aprilia Rs50, Reiju RS2 Matrix, Motohispania RX/Peugeot). But the Yamaha was definitely in the 30's and the 10% difference was only between the other's...

I was going up a big 40 road on a peugeot 50 doing the top uphill speed of 34mph, when i ended up in a race with 3 peds and an RS50. The RS50 shot past me doing at least 50, and the peds, although slower than 50 still shot past me Confused . The peugeot's speedo goes up to 60. Is there any chance of it approaching this?

Yes.

It involves a jet engine and a lot of rope to secure it with.

But as far as acheiving it without the jet engine goes, on a normal road on a normal day, no, you'd never get to 60.

Maybe if it was a Liquid Cooled Speedfight 2, ive heard they can occasionally touch 60 (indicated).

If thrown out of a plane.

Or bored out to 70cc with gear up kits it might reach that speed...

I think that those race rep 50's are a bit silly, but no doubt they really look quite trick these days, compared to the embarasingly crap looking 50's around when i was 16. RS50's etc with noisy race pipes and a bit of tuning are doing 60mph! i think thats plenty fast enough for a 16yr old new rider to be doing. I heard that you can fit 70cc kits like they do on twist n go scoots to some race rep 50's, and they make around 9-13bhp, with speeds around 75-80mph.
As for the SF, it is known as one of the slowest sporty scoots, but if you spend enough on it and convert to 70cc, 65mph might be had.

The TZR50 when derestricted is as fast as other 50's of its class (gpr50, rs50, etc) and you should be aiming for about 60mph+. To fully derestrict a bike like that it usually involves remving a cone from the exhasut (sometimes theres 2 cones, one in the down pipe and one in the tail pipe section) and you have to change the sprockets as on restricted geared 50's they fit small sprockets, when fully derestricted this will help alot and will make the gears last much longer. It will be best to get a race pipe, contact sccc.co.uk they do a full metrakit race pipe for just over 100 quid, and with the sprockets changed you should be hitting 65mph quite easy.

OK i have had 2 TZR's. First one was derestricted and went a little bit over 50mph but as the speedo only goes to 50mph it is alittle unclear. 2nd one i have just stuck a leovince V6 racing exhasut on with a size 1.16mm jet this needs to be done to stop the bike running lean and exploding. this bike gets me to around 60mph a bit over i think but i still get done by my mates gpr50 quite considerabley. The airbox is quite restrictive wateva people tell you so put a cone on that subsiquently you will need a bigger jet however unsure what size you will either have to get your bike dynoed or plug test it yourself. also the bike has a cdi unit which is a small black box that restricts the bike a replacement one is between £70-100 i thinks but this is just what fellow bikers have told me it is not gosple. RESTRICTED THE YAMAHA TZR50 IS ABSOLUTE BULLS**T!!!

I was going to modify my MT50 then I thought what's the point? It'll cost the guts of 200 quid or more and once I'm 17 I can buy a bike that will be able to reach acceptible speeds without wrecking the engine.

Seen this TZR 50 on another forum. Might be worth asking him about it.

with a stinger that long, on what is clearly a custom spanny system, you have to wonder why they bothered with an end-can at-all. Confused Mr. Green

[hijack mode]
Whilst avoiding bias and chavish attitude...

The gpr 50 owns all other 50's without doubt !!!!!

The Rs50 has a better resale value tho, and slightly better build quality. And a minutely higher topend on the flat. Downhil tho Very Happy

That said they are still small potatoes. But they are great fun. When ive got a nice suzuki b-king (they WILL go into production) no doubt i'll get a wee derbi gpr 50 as a hack Razz for around town. Absolutely spot on handling, But then again the corners i was striving for on that bike, i was taking one handed scratching my arse on the goose at 70+ Very Happy Much to car drivers annoyance when they try and race you and you are doing it all one handed.

But that was the old me... Im good now.

[/hijack mode]

Correct me if im wrong but i was under the impression they had done a good job restricting TZR's in that it accelerated like a derestricted 50 up to 30 then electrically was stopped?

When the TZR's come in from Italy they are restricted to 15mph Shocked , the computer is then modified to allow 30. I have a TZR50 and i have a MK exhaust fitted with a 105 jet. My friend has an RS50 race replica, and he can't keep up with me atal, not in accelarating or topend. I'm thinking of getting a different gearbox and a K&n cause before i know what i'm doing my speedo is at 50 (and it will stay there) and i'm redlining in 5th..

Hi

Some markets are resitricted to 40kmh which is 25mph, so that is more likely than 15mph.

All the best

The law states in Italy you can drive one when your 14 years old if its only capable of 15mph.. the same in the U.K but its 30mph here. You probably get all these 14'yr olds going around saying how fast their bike is cause they have had it semi unrestricted to 30.. lol

But saying that, the bike is unsafe when its restricted to 30, cause not only is that crappy topend but it takes you like 20 seconds to get there.. Pulling into a busy road was hell till i got my can.
