PostPosted: 15:02 - 02 Feb 2003    Post subject: Elvington and other Straightliner dates... Reply with quote

For the delectation and delight of all of those here who want to try out, or already enjoy 1/4 mileing, here are the forthcoming 2003 dates for the Straightliners drag racing season, sponsored by Streetfighter Magazine.

April 6 Elvington
April 20 York Raceway
May 3-4 Thorney Island
May 18 Elvington
June 15 Elvington
June 28-29 East Kirkby
July 6 To Be Arranged
July 18-20 Jurby, Isle of Man
August 17 East Kirkby
August 25 York Raceway
September 13-14 Crail, Fife
October 12 Elvington Finals

You can run for fun or, if you like, enter one of the classes. If yoyu enter a class you get your name in the Magazine and they may even stick a photo of you up in an issue or two (which is nice).

There are various classes to enter, each class being based on bracketed times. These races are what is known as 'bracket racing' so if you are in the 11.50 class and you run a time of 11.48 seconds on the 1/4 mile you will 'break out' into the 10.50 class and in doing so move up a class. This is not what you want to do if you are running competatively in one particular clas as it launches you from top of your class and possible point scoring position to tha back of the next class, with no chance of beating the much quicker riders in this class. Got to use your noggin and sandbag a bit if you are close to breaking out. This takes a bit of practice.

My advice (and it is worth very little) is to run in a class which you feel you can compete in. For example, a person who has never drag-raced before and has only recently become the proud owner of a Hayabusa would not want to join the 9.50 class. They would be much better off in the 11.50 class until they found their feet. Once the rider gets used to launching the bike, the timing lights and starts to see an improvement on their times, they may feel that they would be better to move into the next class. Two ways to do this.
First is to 'break out' of the class they are in by posting a quicker time than that class allows, automatically moving them into the faster class.
Second way is to register for the faster class at the next meeting they attend.

It is common to see drag friendly bikes like Hayabusas in slower classes. Conversley it is likely that you would see much less powerful bikes in the faster classes. It is all about what the rider feels comfortable with.

Classes last year were:

Competition
Top Bike
9.50
10.50
11.50

many may wish to start in the 11.50 class first. I doubt that any will need to apply for faster classes than the 10.50 (this and the 11.50 are the most popular classes and there is a good chance that you can find the same/similar bike to run against.

Flyers are only available at Elvington events in the left hand lane and do not cost any more above the drag racing entry fee...

Licences are not needed but your bike will need to pass basic scrutineering so make sure steering head and wheel bearings are good and chain, sprockets and tyres are not shagged out.

Loose fairing panels will have to be secured with appropriate fittings and if you run nitrous you cannot use it in anything slower than the 9.50 class.

I will see if I can find the specific class rules and post them for anyone who shows more than a passing interest... Laughing

Sorry Mr D69.

A 'Flyer' is specific to Elvington only.

An explanation of a Flyer.

Elvington is run at an airstrip. The airstrip is almost two miles long from start to finish. Some of this is taken up with the pit area and the start area so there is about 1.5 miles to play with.

The drag srip runs in two lanes for 1/4 mile (natch). Riders in the right lane MUST peel off to the return road after passing through the 1/4 markers.

Riders in the left hand lane may carry on down the strip IF they have notified the Track marshall at the stage area that they intend to do a flyer.
Don't worry, everyone in the left hand lane is asked at stage if they want to run on for the Flyer. Just nod your head or make little bird flap shapes with your arms. Smile

In effect this is what happens:

You're in the left hand lane and the light goes green so of you trot at the fastest speed you can go down the strip. Right hand lane user does the same. A few seconds later you both pass the 1/4 mile boards and the person to your right slows don and hooks right onto the return road.
You, on your other lane, have now run your 1/4 mile time and your timng card is alreadt being printed out back at the Timing Caravan.
You just keep the throttle wide open, don't shut off. You aren't against the clock now and all that matters is getting the fastest speed possible out of your bike. So settle down, you have all of the VERY wide runway at your disposal and a very long time to get up to speed. Make sure you are doing everything you can to get the most out of your bike. Get flat on the tank, move your weight/position around and feel for that 'bubble' where you have very little wind noise. This is the sweet spot where you need to be.
Watch for the Flyer marker boards to hove into view.

It seems to take ages and you start to think 'Have I passed them?'
The temptation is to shut off but don't! If you haven't passed a Blue Merc van sitting on the left of the runway then you haven't reached the end.

The van is in sight so aim between the widely spaced boards and try and eake the last tenth of an mph out of your squeling machine.

DON'T SHUT OFF JUST YET! Many people loose precious mph they have worked hard for because they shut off a fraction of a second before they cross the speed timing beams. Keep that MoFo nailed!

Once you flash past the boards shut of, sit up and brake, there is plenty of braking area for the likes of us. Don't be tempetd to get your knee down on the wide sweeper peeling left onto the return strip. It has grass and gravel on it and it is badly surfaced and often damp. Also your tyre will be cold at the sides and will offer even less grip than you think you have. No one has binned it there yet so you will get laughed at if it happens to you (not least, by me).
Now time to pick up your 'flat out need for speed land missile proof of card'.
Run a little way back down the return strip and peel right and pull up to the timing van. They will give you your slip and you can watch the other riders come through the speed trap if you like. Some are awesome to watch.

Ride back to the return strip and keep to the right of the strip. Remember, this is an operational runway and an aircraft can land on your head if you aren't careful.

Do not speed back down the return strip and do not fuck about in any way, No wheelies, stoppies or burnouts. Marshalls are keeping a keen eye on the return road (It is in full view the whole time) and you will get a bollocking and kicked off the event if you mess about. Same goes for the pit area, no kill switch fun here either. The organisers and many of the competitors have worked hard to make the day so they simply do not tolerate people fucking around. Spectators (including kids) walk freely around the pit area and the pit area is very busy with other competitors. No one is impressed by showoffs because you have to have some pretty serious kit to actually get an eyebrow raised here. Don't spoil your day and don't spoil anyone elses.

It is usually about £10 per person in and £25 to run as much as you like (can fit in).

Cars are allowed in but cannot run (dur!). Its bikes only chaps...

HEY! I did 520 miles to be down South a week ago today Mr! Now its your turn. Laughing

Anyway the NSA do most of the stuff down south. Straightliners have it tied up around these parts.

You want to run flat out without fear of prsecution and get a real proven speed for your bike instead of dodgy clock speed?

Then you come North, simple as that... Cool Wink

Anyone have any ideas what they will get from their bikes, top speed and 1/4 times?

Elvington has great grip as it is concrete so launches can be hard. Not much chance of breaking traction like at Santa Pod unless you are really trying or riding bigger cc bikes...

11.3 on the 1/4 - I have to get an 11.0something Very Happy and I've indicated 165 down the M1, I reckon it's good for 170 though, so if it's like it normally is that willl be a true 150-155ish \o/
At BdB as I passed the 1/4 I was indicating 140, it was actually 122, so hopefully it should be about the same difference when I'm indicating 170 Very Happy

Phoe will do a 3 sec 1/4 mile. When he revs the blade and it explodes he'll be shot like a bullet through the timing lights Wink

I'd probably offer a go on mine, providing you take it easy first time I haven't had a chance where I can actually pull the throttle on absoultey as hard as pos without the rear sliding... control it a bit and the front comes up instead Smile. Might have changed the gearing by then though.
It's allready been crashed enough times so another won't make much difference.

And yes. I'm stooopid Smile
