So there I am blatting around the country lanes around Ashbourne, when I run out of petrol.

Simple enough I pull to the side of the road and turn the tap to reserve and try to start her up.
Nothing. She is turning over but not catching.

After a bit of head scratching I open the tank to find it bone dry. Arses.

Turns out the previous owner has put the fuel tap back on 180 degrees out of line. On is reserve, reserve is on.

What an absolute numpty.

So cheers mate, you screwed up my lovely evening ride.

You should of learned when your bike runs out of petrol, with the old jerry can trick, ride it till it runs out so you know it wont happen again then with this magical jerry can full of petrol, you can be on your way.

He removed it when the bike was resprayed.

I now know that the ZX9R does 125.9 miles to a tank of petrol.

It doesnt help when you only fill up half a tank and forget and think that you've fully filled it up to the brim... Laughing funny though!

Reset the clock everytime you fill up.

My ER5s fuel gauge doesn't work. Thats what I do.

As soon as I hit 90, I fill up. Always do.

The Z on the other hand has a very accurate digital gauge.

But i've been there on my CG years ago when I was learning. I had to push the bike back home and I live at the top of a hill.

How very odd...

Exact same thing happened to me twice. First time in the middle of some road works on the Edinburgh bypass (mildly embarassing) the second time during city centre rush hour (but within walking distance of a garage.)

On my honda On is up res is down, on the yamaha on is down res is up. That's confusing enough if you haven't checked, the arrow on the yamaha is miniscule, you need a magnifying glass to see it.

Anyway, another yamaha rider (he had a PY80) pointed the arrow out and I thought fine, that's that sorted: No! Turns out the tap is on upside down. Res=On On=Res. Rolling Eyes During that time, my speedo stopped working so I couldn't use the odometer as a guide.

All fine now though, I just stand on my head in the petrol station...

Thumbs Up

What are the smallest jerry cans you can get? I'm thinking of say 500ml that will fit under the seat, just so that if the inevitable does happen (res tap doesn't work) I can just top her up and fill up properly at the next petrol station.

Anyone else ride around with a small jerry can at all times?

I'm thinking of getting a SIG bottle and clipping it under the seat (obviously with some petrol in it... Confused ) Would save time and bother...

Thumbs Up

Good point. I take it the petrol is fine being in there? Any metal bottle will do I guess.

It'll just be a godsend if you do find yourself out of fuel. An extra 5-10 miles of petrol to fill up would be a real help!

Oddest thing... I've never run empty. For me the trick is to budget yourself extra fuel at all times. It doesn't cost any more to fill up before hitting reserve than it does to fill up after hitting reserve, and you get an extra few liters of emergency fuel in the exchange.

My advice is learn your bike's range. Mine is about 145-150 miles per tank. At 100-110 miles, I fill up. I never have less than 30 miles worth of gas in the tank at all times, so it's never a concern if I'm out and I start running short.

A friend of mine has a SIG bottle filled with petrol in his kit car, (I've emptied it once in the past into my 125. Embarassed ) Works fine for him, I'd just recycled it every couple of months if you don't use it.

Thumbs Up

When I was around Ashbourne, there were quite a few tiny petrol garages in the middle of nowhere, so hopefully you didn't have far to push.

Would you need to have a vent in the bottle to allow for it getting warm?

Gas containers in the US are made of a flexible plastic. They only vent if pressure in the containers hits a certain threshold. Metal containers with venting allows contaminants into the gas as well as letting it evaporate out. Let's not even get into what happens if you like to lean a lot or not use the gas for a year. Neither are a big deal if you're Lonewolf Wink, but you could end up making things worse with lousy year old fuel gunking things up.
