I am not being sexist but refer to those bike that are built for nothing more than looking good and absorbing money.
There is a new Triumph Dealer in Digbeth Birmingham and I turned up there today (on foot as it is not far from my house). They have the normal over-friendly sales people, one of them insisted on showing me a "Scrambler" that was labelled "Not for sale" and told me it had cost a lot to build ( it was either £15K, £20K or £50K can't remember) I asked him how competitive it was, He again told me it was a one off. I asked him how good it was on the track and he said it was not a track bike, it was a one off. I said it is a scrambler, how competitive is it in a scramble? He then asked me what a scramble is. I said it looks heavy, has short suspension and motoX tyres, what is it for? He again told me it was a one off but they could build me something similar for an extra 6K on book price.
I left.

To be fair, it is in Digbeth. Probably designed for 'scrambling' away from shootings, ghetto style Whistle

The problem there is not posey bikes, as it's a one off, there's only one in millions. The problem is sales people who know more about sales than they so about bikes advertising it as the wrong thing.

I agree completely though it's ridiculous.

Small Heath? Not too bad an area, although now I know you live there I can see why. Probably don't want anyone chewing their noses. I used to live in Sparkhill, wasn't bad at the time. Visited someone there recently and the area was full of Somalian "gangstahs". Gone down hill to say the least Sad

Sounds like it's built in the finest traditions of lardy british scramblers to me. Two ways of going about making a scrambler as I recall.

1) Build a lightweight single, maybe a 125 stroker or a 350 4-stroke with boingy suspension and pick your way through the mess.

2) Get the most powerful 650 twin you can find. Tune it off its nuts. Bump the compression through the roof then tune it even more and run it on dope. Fit a single seat and wide handlebars but retain any features such as conical hub brakes, a peak on the headlamp and massive steel mudguards. Fit knobbly tyres and a rear sprocket like a dustbin lid. Then point it straight at the finish line, wind it open, dump the clutch and hope you arrive there at the same time as the bike does.

The Triumph scrambler is a "one-off"? Pevensey Gedges have three, I think they're for Steve McQueen wannabes. Laughing

First of the stock scramblers I saw was in Shropshire. It had a race plate on it so I asked the rider how well did it go in the mud.
He looked confused and quickly left.
My mate told me they all have a race number from the factory for show.

i know exactly what you mean ariel, i get that feeling whenever i see an xt6 with dual sport tyres and a polished frame, with not a hint of mud/off road use anywhere on it. i just want to scream 'get a bandit!' at the owner Laughing

Cheers

I felt the same thing. Scrambler is heavier than my W650. I can't imagine riding such a heavy bike on dirt Shocked . T100 is much better bike for me.

Turbo shall be fitted to the 1000, plus a few other choice mods. And it will be Über.

It shall then never be ridden unless its sunny and dry for obvious reasons. And no not just because its a Suzuki.

But bah, I'll still have an everyday bike and a stunt bike (if I ever find one closer than Arizona). Wink

One of those?

Google brought up loads of pictures of that bike for "Triumph Scrambler".

I dont think there is anything wrong with bikes having a retro look. Its not a serious offroad bike in the same way most 4x4's arent a serious offroad car.

Id prefer to have a retro style bike like a triumph scrambler than a retro style bike like a harley.

I dont actually want a retro style bike, but I dont think there is anything wrong with them. They are made for a market and they sell, therefore they are a product which makes the company money.

Triumph as we know it now started with these retro models that dont need to be redesigned every few years, so they were good to get the company going so now it can make the likes of the 675

Not everyone wants a race bike, even if they want a bit of image as if it could be a race bike.

Dammit! You could at least let me get the line out!

There are a few 'scramblers' I like the look off

The Triumph, The Enfield, The Paris-Dakar BMW from about 20 years ago, the MT350 (yeah I'm a wuss and want electric start)

I don't see what the problem is with running a bike like that on dual use or road tires and hardly taking it off road.

Do you take the piss out of people on sportsbikes who rarely, or never trackday them?

My TT600 is in for a service at Hugendon M40 Triumph tomorrow and I have arranged to have a courtesy bike which I'm told is either going to be a scrambler or a bonneville. Luck of the draw as to which i get but if it's the scramble I'll let you know what I think.

"One off"! Maybe it's just nobody wants one!

Looking at the specs they're only about 65bhp from a 900cc parallel twin, so should be nice and tourqey, but not necessarilly that quick.

I'll let you know! Thumbs Up
