Posted: 20:34 - 16 Apr 2008 Post subject: What colour shall I paint this tank? |
 |
|
Hi, this is the bike I'm working on atm. It came to me in a sorry state (see show and tell). Im asking this question again in here really so it gets noticed and possibly will get a quicker reply.
https://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z115/adrianwest1989/My%20bike/my%20cbr/DSCN2116.jpg
As you can see, there is a bad dent in the original tank and Iv got a black replacement in pretty good condition.
I have a few options.
1)Get rid of the rust in the dented tank, touch it up and keep the same damaged tank.
2)Stick on the black one, leaving it black.
3)Paint the black one completely blue or white myself
4)Pay a proffesional to have it looking mint
(Since the rest of the panels are far from mint it seems a little silly, but i want it to match the bike)
If you agree that I should have it painted to match the rest of the panels do you have any idea where I can get this done??? and roughly how much for??? They are my main to questions, where can it be done and for how much. Preferably in the West London area but I am prepared to travel if I must
Any help/advice greatly appreciated as always.
Cheers

I like the rothmans paint job
No where would anyone paint the complete bike the same as that for 150 quid??!
Maybe one plain/flat colour for that price, even then that figure sounds to good to be true.
Iv decided to have a go at painting it myself, I painted a moped a few years ago to a pretty high standard. Im just guna take me time with rattle cans, If it goes tits up, it can always be rubbed off and then be done by the profesionals. My main concern is the stripes of gold and red around it. The two base colours should be easy enough, Im just lazy and hadnt wanted to mask off the first colour done, but I think il be patient with it....

Im getting all my fairings (minus the tank) sprayed up one colour for £220.
Providing you take them off the bike, and just want them all one colour, Resprays are pretty cheap.
Tank cost me £50 for the paint work alone. Would of cost in exess of £100 but it was sprayed by a mate who is a pro body shop sprayer for Audi. So as you can imagine, It is one FUCKING amazingly painted Tank.
The dent looks MAHOOSIVE so I think touching it up is out of the question!
If you want the spare tank painting, Give a mobile sprayer a ring, They will do a 10 times better job than anyone can do with rattle cans. Okay it may not be a top class Body shop, Room temperature controlled fancy Paint job you would expect to see on a brand new Fireblade. But it will cost you about £40.
And in all fairness, to buy The primer, paint, clear coat and your time/patience probably comes to £40 anyway.
Flick through your yellow pages and give some of the "bumper scuff and dent repair" places a call. I was quoted £60 for a ding removing from my Golf Wheel arch and the whole wing spraying in.
BUT as its a 57 Plate motor, I would rather have a Pea sized ding than a slightly off coloured wing.

At the same time though, what condition are the plastics in, you may have to get them fixed and stuff. Another thing to consider if they have been bodged before, which a lot of 400s may have been, the repairs might not be completely in situe. if you get it fixed off the bike, it might not sit exactly right, which will put stress on the plastic and on the paint.
Depends entirely on the plastics though.

Theres a few cable ties holding on the fairings... (il say no more lol)
Iv got exams looming, I think Il just ride with it as is, dent and all untill they are outta the way, at least my nose cone is mint!
apart from the support holes are snapped off on each side
A few of the fairing brackets were missing from the bike, so Im guna fabricate some out of metal, no way am I paying Honda for new ones, and breakers are only so helpful when it comes to second hand bits.
Had to recut a larger thread in 2 of the holes in the swingarm for the hugger today, damn annoying, some fool had threaded them in the past. Had to remove exhaust hanger and a few other bits again. Its frustrating when you put a part on and think 'ah at least I wont have to take that off again for some time' and then the next day your there with the ratchet unbolting it again lol |
