Ok syptoms>>>

when i turn the key no lights or anything work (not even the side stand light on the dash)

the bike bump starts fine and when the engine is going all the dash board lights up as nomal except dimmer (as if the battery is crap and its running off the alternator)

I have changed the battery thinking it was the problem however i have charged the new one up and connected it and the bike is still as dead as a dodo.

Is it a fuse that has blown or what? this is peeing me off now!

Before all this happened the bike was running fine except the battery wasnt holding its charge. The bike had been off the road for 3 weeks though and when i come to start it this happens...

can anyone help me please
cheers
a very distressed newbs Rolling Eyes

Sounds like the reg/rec if you ask me. Could be the alternator too.

I had a similar prob on my nsr... it was the fuse that had gone.

*Shouldn't* cause any probs, but best to get it sorted soonish anyway ... if it is the fuse that should be easy enough to sort out.

Hi

Looking at the wiring diagram for my RS (should be fairly similar) it looks like the problem is the 15amp fuse.

Basically the charging system works with 2 wires going from the alternator up to the regulator / rectifier unit. One of the outputs from that goes up to the 15 amp fuse and then onto the battery. Another wire comes off the battery to go to the starter relay (so there should be 2 wires comming off the battery positive terminal). However between the regulator / rectifier unit and the fuse a wire comes off to feed most of the electrics.

So, it the fuse blows then no power can get from the battery to feed the electrics. However once the engine is running the power from the regulator / rectifier unit can feed the electrics directly, but at low revs there is not enough for everything to work properly.

My guess is that the old battery was so bad that it started to allow power spikes, which blew the fuse. Often an old battery will cause bulbs to blow

All the best

Keith
