Hi

I have been looking for older 400's to buy and the restrict and i came accross a nice looking FZR400 on autotrader (its the 1988 model and imported) I went to go and see it yesterday and had a pretty good look over it. I know it will need a new rear tyre (barely legal atm) new fork seals and the screen has a crack accross it which is currently being held together by gaffa tape. Luckily the screen is black and so is the tape so it doesnt look that bad, but i would be looking to replace it.

The slightly worrying thing is that when the man who i went to see started it it did seem a bit of a chore to start it. It took about two seconds, and didnt seem like an especially clean start. Granted when it started it did sound amazing.

Anyway the two questions i was hoping someone could help me with are:

Is the starting typical of bikes this age or would i be looking for a new battery or starter motor?

The man who i saw said he was looking to sell for £995 - does this seem resonable given the state of the bike? I priced up a tyre, fork seals and screen and it came to about £120

Thanks

2 seconds isn't that long!

It depends on a number of things. though. If it's been sat around for a long time, it could have clogged carbs, old petrol or a slightly flat battery. It might just need a clean-out and good ride.

Then again, compression could be bad or the ignition system could be poor.

What's the suspension like? Are the bushes and bearings ok ?

If you're not too sure about mechanical things, then a 20 year old bike may not be ideal.

thanks it seems that i am just being a bit paranoid, the man who i saw said it hadn't been riden in a week or so. I think I am just being a bit over cautious,

unfortunately i didnt ride the bike, was against riding it without insurance and without the necessary licence (currently restricted to 33hp - the bike wasnt) although i sat on it and it seems the correct height and the suspension seems ok - i know this isnt the same as riding it.

i will admit i am not that mechanically minded but i can learn and my dad knows a decent mechanic who would always be around if anything disastrous were to happen - i am hoping i would be able to manage....
