Most of you'll probably know by now that I'm a newbie so gotta buy all the gear as well as the bike Sad

Thing is though, the helmet's the most important part so choosing the right one is important. I've been looking at Shoe Raids at the moment - how do Shoei rate against other manufacturers, in particular Arai?

Yeah defo down to personal preference!!

Ask the guy in the shop what the noise is like between certain models but otherwise - try it on, look in the mirror, wiggle it about, play a bit more, jiggle it, butt a few walls (no don't do that one really!!)
Then decide which one you like the best and which makes you look coolest Cool

You will generally find that the dearer you go, the nicer and better it is but I think there are quite a few exceptions to this general train of thought - I like my lid at the mo cos it's a face up and was cheap - Caberg F1

Others wouldn't tough it with a barge pole - just personal choice.

Arai's are always gonna be the top manufacturer to have, but like Kev says they ain't realistically gonna give you any more protection in a crash. All I can think of that's different is that you get an individual number for each Arai lid so if it's crap they can find out which person made it and sort you out with a new one.

personally for a half decent lid you have to pay more than a oner or you will end with something crap and everything in the £100 - 200 region are practically the same quality so base your decision on if your lid suits your leathers and bike thats what I did.. Very Happy

I disagree, my little bro got a helmet for £70 that's a type A so it's passed all the same test's as a £500 Arai.

The Caberg was £90 - Advertised as RRP £100.

It's type A and has a chin up - will stop me dying and looks good - Price isn't always a sign of quality - look at MacDonalds - Really expensive and shit food!!!!!!

yeah but with arai you get an almost perfect fit that no other helmet has so it wont shake on his head when he's doing more than 50mph and did have a half decent paintjob or decent breathing holes?

Just because Arai's are expensive doesn't mean they are a better fit. It is down to personal preference and head size Very Happy Sometimes you will find that a cheaper lid fits better and may offer better protection in an accident because it fits more snuggly. What has a pintjob got to do with it? Doesn't keep you any safer in a crash, my point was if you want maximum safety (i.e. a type A lid) you don't have to spend a small fortune on a lid.

just because its got a sticker on it saying type a it doesnt meen you will get as much protection as a more expensive lid and when it all comes down to it how can you put a price on your head

Kev I know what you are saying but at the end of the day a type A helmet that is approved for track use is gonna offer you more than enough protection for road use.

Look does it really make that much difference no F***ing lid will save you if you go head first into something its just like leathers crash any faster than 50mph and it you've most probaly got a big chance of not surviving anyway!! Shocked

I would expect an expensive arai *does* offer you a bit better protection than a similarly stickered cheaper helmet , but in the end the most important thing is the fit of the helmet.

The 'best' helmet in the world is useless if it doesn't fit right!!

Scoob,

It passed all the same level of tests for pass A as the Arai but how much further would the Arai go in a head to head competition with a £70 quid helmet. I'd rather pay a bit more for the Arai, in a head smash I want the best money can buy.

Kevo.
