Hi all, first post on this forum, Silky666 put me onto you lot after I had an evening of gentleman's entertainment with him in the woods.
Anyways, that's the hello out of the way, now to the point of the post;
I currently have an XR250 (for winter mud plugging) and a KDX220R (for some 2T fun) and am looking for the third and final bike for my collection.....
...a few facts:
I'm allergic to maintenance, but an oil change is probably within my abilities.
I'm a big bugger at 6' 6" and about 16 stone.
I'm reasonably fast off road and looking to get faster.
I'm unlikely to ever find the time for competitive riding so the most I expect to do is the odd enduroland and green laning.
I'm looking for a bike with a silly power to weight ratio, but capable of covering some road miles when needs be (80% dirt, 20% road). Doesn't need to be too comfortable on the road, just fast!
I don't want it to spend more time in the garage than on the road, so an trying to avoid anything too highly strung.
I want it to be able to wheelie under power alone in 3rd.
So far I was thinking of an LC4 KTM Enduro but have been tempted by some Husabergs.
Budget up to about £3,500.
What's the reality of maintenance differences between the LC4s and more highly tuned enduro bikes?
Anyone able to give some advice and point me in the right direction?
Also, I tend to ride out every Thursday evening from Coldharbour way - Anyone fancies joining me send a PM.
That'll do for now!

Quite a difference between the 4 stroke EXCs and the later LC4s. My 690 is listed at 3000 mile service intervals, while the EXCs are listed in hours.
The LC4s won't give you amazing power to weight really - the 690 is supposed to be the highest power production single, but the Husaberg 501 I used to have definitely felt more lively I'd say.
For that money you could get quite a late Husaberg 650, which would definitely tick those boxes.
However, you're still talking servicing in hours.
My 690 won't power wheelie in third, while the Husaberg just about would with similar tall gearing - obviously if you gear anything low enough, it will easily do that.
Remember that the competition bikes often don't handle sustained periods of flat out on the road too well - though if you've got half decent dirt tyres on, that'll probably be less of an issue anyway as they tend to get a bit wobbly before the engine's topping out on hard-top.
If you're not in a rush, welcome to have a go on my 690 sometime - though I've just lent it to someone else on here with SM wheels on in the short term. Was thinking of organising another 'four marks' trip, where I'd have my 200EXC too. |
