I'm setting off to France/Spain next Tuesday night. I'm taking all the usual stuff (Less camping gear as I'm going to stay in hotels/B+Bs).
But I haven't planned any itinery or routes. I'll be taking maps and a TomTom with me. I'm hoping to get into France, look at the map and find a road which looks cool then just play it by ear really.
I've booked one hotel in Barcelona for the Saturday night as I want to see MotoGP on the Sunday, but that's it. I roughly know which way I want to aim.
Should I work it all out before going? The reason I haven't is because I don't want to only see stuff that's on a pre-planned route, that and I can't be arsed. I just want to get over there and point the bike at a road and follow it.
Has anyone else just got over there with nothing booked ? Any issues ?

Me & Korn went out to Spain last year for three weeks with our dirt bikes on the back of my pickup, no specific plans other to find interesting places in the mountains. Good for a couple of weeks, then drove a lap of Spain and we found was that most of the country is olives and oranges, so we decided to drive for 26hrs to go to Amsterdam.
Nothing wrong with not having your route completely planned out. |

Nope its not crazy, I went out last year to France with a plan summed up in a single word..
South,
I didn't even mean to stop in St Omar (for lunch) or even Reims I felt tired and thought best stop, as I considered Dijon to be good to hit the N74. And Somewhere near the N85.
Didn't plan on staying in Castellane either or grenoble.
But I recall the post about having Wifi so you can just googlemaps interesting routes I suppose.
HOWEVER if you are wandering like I did try to write the roads you find!, I found a road between Oyneux and the swiss border , it was unmarked on the map it was awesome,
Also the bit between Oyneux and chambery I know the general area this awesome cop chase incident happened but not the exact road. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. Best of luck to you, I'm doing the exact same thing when I leave on Monday. I've deliberately not set myself any plans as I just want to get out there and go wherever I feel like.
Hope it all works out for and post a write up when you get back... ____________________ My Bikes: Piaggio NRG| Aprilia RS 125| Suzuki GSX-R 600|Yamaha Fazer Ducati 848

Sounds like fun! When i first read that post I thought you rode dirt bikes for 26 hours from Spain to Holland!! Hardcore!!
Itchy, glad you've told me that! My plan is pretty much get into France, head towards Montpellier/Marseille then down the coast to Gibraltar via Barca. I will be taking a laptop so hopefully I'll have a good chance of recording the roads I've been down (With the help of GoogleMaps) and then I can share them here when I get home!
Can't wait to get out there, I was just getting a bit nervous as I'm always getting lost (Like today when I left Donnington, with about 5 miles to reserve ended up doing a 20 mile circle before finding somewhere I recognised!) ____________________ Current: ZZR1400

Good stuff. Some reassuring replies there.
Dodger: Yep, providing I come back there will be a write up here. Have a fun/safe trip. Glad to know I'm not the only one!
G: I've got a bit of an idea of what I want to see, and if I do get bored I'll just blast to the East coast and do some sunbathing on the Med. Also, a mate of mine will be holidaying in Malaga at the same time, so if all goes tits up I'll go and show him how to drink!! ____________________ Current: ZZR1400
