Right my mate just recently past his bike test which is the A2. He has a CBR125 and really wants to move on to somthing different. However the insurance company wont insure him for a larger bike now, if he gets a bigger bike he will lose the 9 months of no claims. Should he wait with his slow bike for a extra 3 months and get another years no claims or should he just move on and buy a another bike but lose the 9 months of no claims and get insurance by another company.

wait it out, 3 months in nothing, plus in 3 months bikes will hopefully be on the decline price wise as it'll be August which is towards the backend of summer (traditionally)

i'd wait regardless as it will help with his insurance.

otherwise get quotes for the bike he wants with and without 1 yrs NCB, let money decide.

id buy another bike and add it to his current policy (multi bike) and then after a few weeks remove the cbr12 from the policy, or not bother, either way they should offer a option to upgrade to multi bike.
and should only cost a admin fee of around 20 or 30 quid,
quite often its a good way of getting cheaper insurance,
i had a gs500 for 90quid insurance and added a zxr750 a few weeks later for 15 quid, far cheaper than i found any where else to insure a zxr on its own

hi, cheers for the help, im the friend that andys been talking about, i did try to do that multi bike thing, with my current insurance company, however they said they wouldnt do it due to my age, ive already decided to wait the extra 3 months. i also did check the amount of my insurance with out the NCB, as it was almost double what id pay in 3 months.

no competition really.

From the sound of the OP, he is with a company who only insure upto 125 cc bikes. So i would bet that your idea is not a option. Crying or Very sad
Many people would do well to question their ins co's when they have a idea that will be taking the test and getting a larger bike if, upgrading the policy is poss. Might cost a few ££ more on the 125 to find a policy that allows this, but save ££ in the long run.

I presume you haven't got the money now, but might be worth looking out for a bike in the coming few months - gives you plenty of time to find a really good deal.

Some insurance companies will except no claims bonus that hasn't quite 'finished' yet if you make it clear you won't be riding the bike, so can't get a claim on the new policy.

You could look at "covering the gap" between now and the insurance running out by using eBike Insurance's "pay-as-you-go" scheme. https://www.ebikeinsurance.co.uk

I did the same with my GS125 and SV650. I transfered the policy from the GS125 to the SV650... then after letting the bike sit for a bit not selling, It needed an MOT so insured it with eBike so I could ride it on the road again.

No Reason your mate can't insure a bike on Pay-as-you-Go for a few months then get a new policy.

He would have to keep the 125 as if he sells it he will loose the NCD. 125's are easy to sell on though.
