As nabbed from Visordown (which I was pointed to by someone on LJ)

https://www.visordown.com/motorcyclenews/view/new_road_tax_discriminates_against_bikers/4063.html

New emission-based tax rates set to clobber motorcyclists in yet another bizarre Government-led initiative

UNDER NEW emissions-based rates of road tax announced last week in the Budget, vehicles that produce less than 100g of CO2 per/km will pay nothing - unless they are motorcycles. Despite emitting less than 100g per/km, many motorcycles will next year pay double according to the Environmental Transport Association.
The new rates discriminate against motorcycles despite the fact that CO2 emissions for motorcycles of all types are already below the average level for petrol and diesel-engined cars.

A 125cc commuter bike currently pays a vehicle excise duty of £15 - the rate in 2009 will more than double to £33.

Andrew Davis, director at the Environmental Transport Association said: “A doubling of tax for motorcycles that produce less than 100g of CO2 per/km makes a nonsense of the revised rates of vehicle excise duty - it appears that motorcycles are subsidising the new zero rate of vehicle excise duty for the lowest-polluting cars. At a time when we are struggling to meet emissions targets and high petrol prices, a case must be made for motorcycles that produce less CO2 than cars and use far less fuel.”

Cucking Funts Evil or Very Mad

Why? Bikes are a hell of a lot more environmentally friendly than cars etc.

Has it always been like this or has it been getting alot harder for bikers coincidentally with when I started biking?

Tests in October, Raising full size age to 23, higher, tax, pricier fuel etc.

I hate the tories (bite me) but New Labour is the same BS in a red bottle Thumbs Down

They raising the full size age??!! For fuck's sake! Evil or Very Mad
And this countries way of taxing people is bullshit...
My grandad for example has a 4x4 (not sure what it is) and a Honda Civic Hybrid... He pays more on tax for the Hybrid than the 4x4...

To do the DAS i think you will have to be 23, to do the normal 125cc A2 or equivalent still think you can be 17-18

Someone will (if they haven't already) probably start a petition - or rideout. This is the kind of thing that MAG might get on their hobby horse for...

It'll most probably be just for new bikes if it is introduced I expect.

Car tax is worse - if I'd gone for the newer model of my car (2001 +) I'd be paying £400 a year and rising in tax.

If im right you can take your normal A2 test and have a big bike restricted for two years??? will you still be able to do this option or will you have to have it restricted for longer or until your 23???

I'm paying £220 pa for my cage tax (03 plate 2.0 ltr turbo with unfriendly emissions) and whatever the full tax is on the 'busa.

Insurance and petrol then make life more fun!

This was the only bike related info mentioned in the budget:

Quote:
As announced in the 2007 Pre-Budget Report, in 2008-09 only, the VED rates for motorbikes in the lower band will be frozen, with higher bands increased by £1-2; and rates for heavy goods vehicles, special types vehicles, combined transport vehicles and all vehicle categories linked to the basic goods rate will be frozen. Changes to VED rates for 2008-09 will take effect from 13 March 2008. (t)

We'll find out soon enough tho..no doubt top gear will mention it in the new series.

Just read this after googling it: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2008/03/14/nbudget114.xml

The used pre 2001 car market will soar again until the dictatorship in London introduce this through the back door:
https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/autoexpressnews/217554/city_ban_for_old_cars.html

That's a load of tosh. My 14 year old Toyota is very eco friendly and it's unfair to classic cars too. There was a petition but it ended on the 18th March.

Big_Ham, you forgot that Britain is pretty apathetic (hence people complaining when others wanted to blockade the fuel depots because it meant they might be inconvenienced)

Also, getting 1000 bikers to just block Parliament Square (which would be awesome!) would probably result in 'anti-terrorism' measures being used.

But if such action were to take place, I would love to be there. Peaceful demonstrations are useless though. They've got to actually pose some sort of threat or else the government doesn't care.

Just to be devils advocate here:

Most bikes manage around 50mpg?
as an average?
125s manage 100, but sports bikes can be 30 odd??

A bike can only carry 2 people
My Civic, which does 36mpg, 30 with AC on can carry 5 people

So the Civic, for number of people moved is way way better than a bike

That would be the arguement that the government use

Of course cars rarely have more than 1 person in them on a commute to work, same can be said for bikes, which makes the bike better.

If you get into Tyres as well, a bike goes through a set every 10k miles? On average? It only uses 2, but a car will get more than 20k miles on a set of 4.
Mine were changed after 40k miles on the car

Dear old Gordon's answer to anything is to tax it. Very original, hey? Binge drinking? Up the tax. Under age drinking? Tax it. 4X4's polluting? Tax them!

But, did anyone hear the suggestion that bikes over 600cc should be banned, because they are polluters? Where does that leave Bentleys, Rolls, Jags, Lotus etc etc.

Last year I did 6,500 miles on my GPZ500, averaging about 70 mpg. How many of you "polluters" clocked up big mileages, and REALLY contributed to global warming as much as, say, a golf GTI or a Subura etc etc?

That's so stupid. Maybe if they left bikes tax-less more people would get out of their cars, do their CBT and buy a scooter.

In turn it would also decrease congestion.

This sucks, could anybody really see 1,000's of bikers protesting?

Surely the police would come out in mega force and seize them or something totally stupid - give everyone a fixed penalty ticket!

As for the bike test's, i thought you had to be 21 to take the DAS?

And if you do the A2 after 2 years you can ride whatever size bike. So I did mine may 2nd 06 and on may 2nd will be able to ride whatever size? Think thats right.

Dont think i'm ready for a litre bike to be honest. The CBR600 is plenty fast at the moment, maybe in a few years although I would love one.

The insurance would also be killer, I pay almost £1000 for the CBR Sad
