Apologies if this has already been covered somewhere - I did do a search but didn't find it.

Following on from the speed camera hidden in horse boxes in Wales, Derbyshire are now using vans disguised as builders vans.

Definitely - no question about it. There's no way they can say that its a safety camera van.

Wouldn't say builders van, more like campervan, espicially with the GB sticker and towbar

Also like the way they haven't informed the DVLA of the colour change Laughing

Riding down through Bath from Cardiff today, saw a couple of vans parked just in front of the speed lines you get on the road for stationary speed cameras on 2 seperate occasions on the A46. So reading this it could be something to do with this.

But then again I don't think thats too bad because the lines are there anyway, you're obviously meant to be looking for road cameras around them anyway so don't mind that

Yes I saw that post about Horse Boxes in Wales. Mine was about disguised vans in Derbyshire.

Must be true, MCN have got Derbyshire police to admit it back in April - click here

...now what does the law say about not informing the DVLA of a change in vehicle colour? If not the law then if a vehicle doesn't match it's V5c document is it insured? So if it's not insured what is it doing on the highway? (here's where some bright spark says that a police officer is insured to drive any vehicle - to which the reply is not if that vehicle is illegal).

You can't really say it's just so they are making money though as if you are speeding, you are speeding and breaking the law. If you don't want to get caught, don't speed.

I do disagree with all the cameras though as I do speed. If I get caught though I will take the punishment on the chin.

Why is it disguised then if not to prevent you slowing down when you see it and thus depriving them of revenue?

Just because it is the law doesn't make it right, or even safe for that matter.

We all know that when we see a speed camera, we slow down, as soon as we've passed it we speed back up again.

This prevents people from doing that.

My point still stands though. If you don't want to get caught, don't speed. It's not difficult.

Have you done any advanced course or advanced riding?
If not then shut up.
If you have then you'll know it's not expected to stay within the posted speed limit all the time (unless doing the exam of course Wink).

It's often said with speed limits obey those in red circles and outside that it's down to what's safe and sensible for the conditions (you will notice the van in question is positioned on what looks like a NSL road).

Sadly this message has been lost. The authorities have come up with the slogan "Speed Kills. The police are responsible for keeping this myth alive. It's done because it's an easy sell. In reality speed does not kill but the inappropriate use of speed may cause fatalities. You see the difference? It's hardly a nice soundbite and a difficult message to put over. So they keep it simple for the stupid masses who obviously can't be responsible for themselves.

It will always be safe at, or below the speed limit that is in the red circle though Very Happy

Tell you what, why don't we give all the chavs standing on street corners a job by walking in front of vehicles carrying a red flag. That'll be good for jobs and also prevent speed related accidents. That's a win, win. You can't object to that can you? Obviously it won't raise any speeding fine revenue but that's not what cameras are for is it? They say they're only there for road safety so any objection to this plan would prove that's a lie wouldn't it!

Wink Very Happy Thumbs Up

Wish they did all those things and put that much effort into tackling anti-social behaviour.
Why don't they disguise camera's in anti-social hotspots?

All these speed traps.........someone's gonna cause a pile up by staring at their speedo rather than the road.

Oh wait, it happens every day. Embarassed Evil or Very Mad

Like most organisations, as long as the intended result is met then the side effects are often overlooked. I wonder, has there been an increase in people being run over?

If a road is dangerous enough to warrant cameras then the only ones in use should be the average speed ones that work over distance. IMO they are the most effective.

If they want people to pay more attention to the speed limits, then they shouldn't put so many inappropriate speed limits. Until that happens, lots of people who have the power to think for themselves will continue to disregard the speed limit and drive at what they consider an appropriate speed.

Save the 20 & 30 limits for where they're actually needed, same goes for speed traps. Only use them where they're increasing road safety rather than as a means of generating revenue. They should all be fully marked up as well, as the main idea is to get people to slow down rather than to hand out speeding tickets to as many people as possible.

I wholeheartedly agree!

Nothing to do with the average speed ones being forward facing of course Whistle

Not neccessarily. You could argue if the weather was bad enough i.e. blizzard it would be stupid to even consider going out in the car/bike. Even if you were going at 1mph you could still crash.
