Ok ive asked this a few times on diff forums and had mixed replies...
I have a CAT-C damaged bike, its not bad at all (headlight, front fairing and handlebar) the rest is mint.
Ive since fixed everything and its MINT MINT again.
Do i have to MOT it? or declare it with the DVLA or get engineer report? etc...
Its on a 57plate with 1000 miles on it so doesnt really need MOT and all damage was cosmetic.
Thanx for replies

MOT it, and your insurers may want a copy of the MOT certificate.

Will it need another MOT next year then? just confusing as its only 6 months old and u don tneed an MOT for a few years with it being new... does this then cancel the "no need or MOT" policy?

Yes. I'm also thinking that a Cat C requires a VIC test/paperwork as well. Goto vosa.gov.uk and search for VIC. This removes the Cat-C so it can be taxed, insured, etc. but the fact it was once Cat-C remains on the database.

Bear in mind it'll seriously affect the resale value and show up on any vehicle search, so when selling best declare it otherwise looks dodgy to any buyers.

bikes do not need a vic.
Im unsure on the MOT status but id have one done regardless just as a double check. Its only £30 or whatever.
Theres no need to mention it to the insurer, however your vehicle valuation will probably be lower than a non cat c one.

MOT and ride.

I stand corrected. However, I read here that when it comes to insurance some companies may want an engineers report, some do, some don't, so something to bear in mind.

When I got my scooter insured (it's a cat D) they never asked me if it was a write-off as I assume they know that already.

You don't have to do anything to it.. just fix it so that it passes an MOT and that is all you need to do.. you don't even have to declare it to your insurance company.

I have and have had numerous cat C/D bikes... it's the way forward, my mint CBR600 F Sport has cost about £850 so far Laughing

I've had 2 mint cbr's built for less than a grand each.. one of them I got by asking around.. I only wanted a subframe and possibly some forks, went to see some bloke in london who said he had a crash damaged one with intention of buying the above, but decided to just buy the whole bike....

Second one I got lucky on ebay. I saw it listed quite badly and I emailed him and made an offer and said I could collect the next morning and pay cash...

My Tips if anyone wants to know...

Arrow Keep your eyes on ebay, they do pop up quite often, usually badly listed too.
Arrow Have cash waiting and be able to collect almost instantly to secure the best bargains.
Arrow Check dealers and breakers, but to be honest they do it for a business and often want reasonable money even for salvage... so your best bet is to find people direct who've been knocked off and paid out on insurance so the salvage doesn't owe them anything and they often just want rid....

IMO you really need cash waiting and be able to pick up ASAP, I only got the last CBR cos of the cash offer and next morning collection.

Just keep your eyes and ears open really.. but you need to be prepared to do a lot of work. The last CBR I bought was roughly

Bike = £450 (it was rather cheap I must admit Smile )
Radiator = £30
Forks = £50
Front wheel = £70
Service parts = £30 ish
Upper fairing = £50
Tank = £20
Side Fairings = £70
Headlight = £100

It needed some other parts that I already had, and I'm sure I've missed a few things.. all I need to finish it for road use is a standard undertray, seat unit , rear disc and front mudguard.

As for the parts... the radiator and forks were an utter BARGAIN... the upper fairing was too.. the last CBR I paid £110 just for an upper fairing.. so prices vary from bike to bike... certain bikes come up cheaper than others same for spares..... it's a lot about patience too! you'll get cheaper parts if you wait and look/ask about.

Sorry to go off-topic but hope that answers both your question and OP's question.

Any more just ask... I can really reccomend fixing broken bikes as an alternative to buying a minty bike for a lot more, provided you're mechanically minded...

I am after a Honda VTR Firestorm at the minute if anyone knows of one going crashed or in need of tidying.

I have just spoke to someone at VOSA.

A Motorbike does NOT need a VIC - ever - it only applies to cars.

A Cat C motobike write-off can be repaired by anyone and the only issue is what the insurance company require before they will insure it. Usually they require a new MOT done and that is all.

As for value - Its an unknown, as a well repaired CAT C that only had cosmetic damage would be as good as a non written-off bike...

It may be as good as, but if you see it was a previous write off you instantly offerless for it cos you can. Smile

And definately yes with the MOTs. Once you MOT it once it is only valid for the usual 12 months even if the vehicle would still not normally need one due to age.

1 MOT a year is legal. You can have one done every month if you like. But if you fail on the second MOT a month later the first one is no longer valid.

Now, if someone searches this topic, they will get a more up to date answer. At least this update is better than some pedboi going "yeah, my Italjet Pug 3000 will do 78mph on the flat".[/quote]

I'm sure that will help Marty McFly and Doc Brown... this is from 2008 Mr. Green !

As for value though; two bikes that are exactly the same in every way except one is a Cat C - which would you buy if they were both the same price? Cat C vehicles are worth less regardless of repair quality.

I just fixed & rode mine after it was stolen & recovered

mot wasn't due for 2 more years so I didn't bother

damage was mostly cosmetic & I replaced everything with genuine new parts

phoned the insurance & the DVLA & they weren't fussed either
