Just got my ZX7R back from the bike shop after having Goodridge hoses fitted. The brakes are still toss though, and the lever comes back about 60/70 %, and they have no real bite. The guy at the bike shop said the calipers probably need an overhaul, and that the Tockico six pots that come as standard are toss anyway, which I do agree with.

But should the calipers need an overhaul at this young age ? Bike's only done 9k and is an 02 P6 model.

But that got me to thinking, if I'm gonna pay to have them overhauled (I.e 24 seals!), I might as well fit some decent calipers. I think the ZX7RR had Nissin six pots which would be nice if I could get 'em.

Couriers

Does anyone know of any other calipers that will bolt straight on to a 7R, and be more effective ?

Seals are cheap and it's unlikely you will need new pistons.

Have you thought about doing this job yourself?

I'm glad that I'm not the only one that thinks the 7R brakes are pants.

Garage rushed me £170 for new seals, yep there are loads of them and cost in the region of £40-50 if I remember correctly.

There was a thread a while back by Killa and Geri mentioned that Busa calipers may fit.

Hi, yeah did think of having a bash myself to be honest, but I'd rather have it done proffesionally at the moment as I'll be leaving sunny England in three weeks to do a tour of France/Spain so I'd rather know it's been done right. I'm bit of a worry wart sometimes and I know I'll just have visions of brake fluid running down the discs while I'm riding if I attempt it!

I think what I'd rather do is fit a set of Nissin 4 pots like those on the R1 etc, but I doubt they'll go straight on without pissing about with bespoke brackets, so if I can find out what other calipers use the same mounting holes I should be sorted.

Yeah, Busa calipers are the same as the ones that the 7R has fitted, so will be just as sh1te I'm afraid. I've just found some seal kits by searching for Busa seal kit though for £25 a caliper. If I wasn't going abroad I'd deffo have a crack at it myself, but just for peace of mind I'll have it done professionally methinks, unless I can find some decent 4 pots that'll go straight on. I had an '88 Gixxer Slingshot last year with 4 pot Nissins and they were sooo much better than the 7R brakes, the difference was immense, even on a 20 year old bike!

FWR do 4-pot and 6-pot Nissins that should fit.

I think R1 one-piece calipers would be an excellent upgrade for your bike if the hole-centres match. 4-pistons will give a firmer lever anyway because of the lower piston volume compared to 6-potters.

I take it they are the standard caliper from like a pre 96 ZXR 750 ? They might be worth considering Thumbs Up

Thanks for the info, but I rung them up earlier and they said they no longer import them Sad Shame.

I was talking to the guy who owns the bike shop I go to earlier and he reckons 96-99 SRAD has 4 pot Nissens calipers that should bolt straight on ??!!

TBH, I don't know how long I'm gonna keep this bike, so I think I might just have the existing Tokico 6 pots overhauled. He quoted me £35 per seal kit and about £80ish to fit 'em. I think if I was going to buy some used calipers off something else I'd probably want them overhauled first before I have them fitted, so probably would end up on the expensive side, which would be fine if I knew I was keeping it for a while, but I'm a bit of compulsive buyer (I had 6 bikes last year!)

edit,:
the nissan fixing spacing is 90mm and the toiko is 63mm on the zxr750
