I have been looking around for a garmin or tom tom rider but they are way to much ££ for a motorbike one another option is can you just buy a car one and put it into a tank bag and bluetooth it to the headset ? or will the power lead not be lighter plug type socket.the bluetooth car ones can be had for £150 starting price....

bump because I need to know also Very Happy

As far as I am aware it would be ok to use a car one with a tank bag etc even just on the tank.

I imagine they will last a few hours without constant power supply if they even have batteries within them Question

I also imagine you could fix it up to the power supply of the bike somehow, but shouldn't be too difficult.

Thumbs Up

Search is your friend

Repost of my response:

I use one of these

Then just use my standard Car Sat Nav in it (Tom Tom One XL)

The kit costs about $65, so £35 delivered then you need a tank bag to put it into
Works really well, it doesnt have sound obviously, and in direct sunlight it can be difficult to see (i just cup my hand round it to shade it).

Just get the 48" power cable from the battery and not the 24" one
Mine just about reaches

If you want a pic of it all set up let me know and i will go and take one for ya, really neat job, and doest he job nicely. Thumbs Up

pretty much the same set up as a bags connection system https://www.motohaus.com/acatalog/Pack_system_.html
I know how to power supply a gps or mobile but wasnt sure if a car gps was powered diff from a proper motorbike gps ie:via a ciggie socket which you can put under the seat, but thanks for that as it is another handy bit of info to have.I know car gps devices would have to be places into a zip-lock bag for water damage but as for sunlight I would of thought some would compensate for it even in a car.

Deanot,

some pictures would be nice along with a list of parts you used where you got them from etc.

Also, if you have the time a small guide to fitting it all although I am pretty sure I could ask some others about that stuff but if you have the time and wouldn't mind.

Cheers.

Thumbs Up Karma

Or you could go to halfords, buy one of these.

Its a simple Cig Lighter to Cig Lighter lead.

https://www.bestbits.co.uk/images/Cigarette_Socket_Extension_Cable.JPG

Chop off the Male end and hard wire it to your battery. Put the Female end under seat.

I have a car sat nav, and I rotate the Window suction clamp so it sticks on my tank. Thumbs Up

Cable tie round the screen brace, and another round the sat nav. Job done.

You can do binges idea but make sure you put an inline fuse on it!!!!

You can get a kit from maplins or hein gericke or ebay for less than a tenner that includes the fuse and you can then put the socket under the seat nicely.... you could run a cig lighter extension lead to the front of bike to plug the GPS in but make sure its a waterproof one.

Parts list:
PKT-001-48 (i got the 24inch one, and it just reaches, 48 will be plenty, just leave any extra under seat)
PTB-001
PAC-024

All from There

You will also need a tank bag, lidl do them for 16 quid if they still have some, i got mine from Hein Gericke

Pics below:
From under seat to tank bag

With seat on

Inside Tank bag
https://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn87/deanoet/3Insidetankbag.jpg

Wire tucked away under seat
https://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn87/deanoet/4wiretuckedawayunderseat.jpg

The satnav sits in the tank bags clear front pocket

EDIT
For fitting it is simple
1. Remove battery, undo terminals, put the wire onto them (red to positive, black to negative), tighten up the battery again and put it back in
2. Get a tank bag and a soldering iron and burn through the tank bag to the correct size hole for the adaptor that goes through the bag (start too small and slowly get bigger till it fits)
3. Fasten on the adaptor using the screws supplied

Sorted

Hardest bit is getting the battery out, or it was on mine as it is surrounded by wires and pipes, so had to persuade it to come out by wiggling and flexing of plastic battery holder

if you buy the kit from power let the tank adaptor coems with instructions for fitting
Took me an hour, including struggling to get battery out and back in as well as sorting the tank bag out

my missus uses a Garmin nuvo with a slim ear piece (like the riding schools use)

She just programs it & puts it in her breast pocket. No, she can't see it but just goes on the instructions and she is quite happy with that. The battery lasts ages as well, she just charges it up at night.

Had no problems with the bag at all
Rode it to Whitby and then up to Newcastle in pouring rain, didnt leak or move around
Then rode back and it hailed on the M6, again, it didnt move

It has been to wales in the snow and it didnt move then either

The one i got is held on by 5 sucktion cups, the base of it is magnetised and it has 4 bungee straps that hook under the lip of the tank as well

It aint going anywhere.

I dont bother with the strap for fastening it to the handlebars anymore it is that secure
Good buy.
Think it was 50 quid, something like that
