Does anybody recommend any good books as to finding camp sites in Spain/France sure sure I passed many of them on my trip out to France last year but I intend to go off the beaten track in July and again I've noticed camping in Spain/Italy is illegal.

I don't really fancy an afternoon spent printing things out.

On a semi related note does sleeping in a bag next to your bike at the side of the road count as camping? , one of the guys in the Westhoughton group did this when he went to Spain namely as he couldn't find camping sites and started to run out of money before his half way point.

My plan so far is Santander ferry , down the North of Madrid maybe Valencia , hug the Southern coast up towards Barca rest day play in the Pyranees for 3-4 days then head towards Marseilles then Nice , N85, N202 cross to Turin out via Swtizerland Germany then Calais, without booking a ferry before hand for Calais.

Never had a problem, aim for somewhere that looks like it would have a campsite, i.e. big lake / river / mountain. Ask for directions if you can't see one, job done Wink

Sleeping in your sleeping bag by the side of the road probably counts as camping. Find somewhere a little bit away from the road and put your tent up.

Just cos it's illegal doesn't mean you'll get in trouble, that only happens if you get caught.

Spent a couple of weeks in Spain camping where ever we could find, in woods up in the mountains, by lakes, on beaches, or in middle of tourist beaches. Only place we got told to move was some tourist beach and it was the large 4x4 that was the problem rather than camping.

Camping in some woods in Spain we were woken up by this around the tents. Be slightly careful about where you camp. Laughing

What I do is plan my route out look at suitable small towns to stop at then use the internet to find campsites. Tourist sites, google campsite and the town in usually brings results. In france there are many municiple campsites within walking distance of the town centre, bars and resturants.

Sleeping by the side of the road in a sleeping bag counts as Roughing It not camping, I would have thought...

Michelin do a 'France campsite' guide, which we used last two trips. Think it was about £12 but includes descriptions of each region, site prices, contact details and all available facilities at each location.

Thumbs Up

If I find it I'll give you the proper name.
